Director of Development letter from the director of development his has been a momentous year at Horace Mann School, as together our community of students, faculty, administrators and staff, of HM parents and families, and of, course, alumni, joined together to celebrate our school’s first 125 years. Throughout the year various departments and Divisions, individual faculty members and clubs and groups, have focused their attention, or that of their students, on just what 125 years of enriched education means. In the arts, Upper Division photography students, for one, created portraits of themselves in the attire of various HM distinguished alumni—alumni recognized the world over for their accomplishments in letters, scientific discovery, scholarship, innovation, or for their leadership in commerce or civic life. The assignment resulted not only in an exciting project, but also an enduring lesson in the art of leading a great and giving life. Across the way, in Horace Mann School’s Lower Division, the library hosted a series of readings that brought alumni to the school to share books they remembered as being among their favorites when these alumni were themselves young students. Alumni who learned at Horace Mann School fifty, sixty, and even seventy years ago, from classes going back to 1942, as well as alumni from 2010 and ’11, sat in the library rocking chair, reading to classes from first through fifth grade. After the story was complete the children asked the alumni what Horace Mann School was like in their day. The answer was universal: it was a school where it was a joy to learn. I was privileged to have a chance to read a favorite book to a class, and to tell the students about my Horace Mann School. I hope I was able to teach them a bit about the lasting value of the courses, the friendships, and the fun that I had, for I certainly learned a lot from them. They were engaged listeners and thoughtful questioners, who clearly saw their Horace Mann School as place of joy as well. Thus, while we honor Horace Mann School’s past and share in the present, it is our future, embodied in the enthusiasm of our students, that we celebrate this year, and each and every day. The experiences of our current student body have been greatly enhanced by the presence of the alumni community throughout this past year. It is our hope that this milestone in our school’s history serves as the inspiration for future collaborations and visits back home to your school on ‘the hill.’ Please join us as our commemorations continue and our journey forward begins by being an active part of the Horace Mann School community now and for years to come.
