Greetings from the
Alumni Council President
This year Horace Mann School
alumni have enjoyed several
wonderful opportunities to connect with classmates from
different decades. We started off the year with a fabulous
Homecoming that drew over 5,000 members of the
greater HM community to the school's Bronx campus on
September 24, 2016. That evening members of reunion
classes got together for dinners and cocktail events that
enabled them to renew acquaintances and strengthen
friendships made at the school.
On December 5, 2016 the Horace Mann Alumni
Association recognized Todd Haimes '74, Artistic Director
and CEO of the Roundabout Theater Company, with its
2016 Award for Distinguished Achievement at a dinner in
his honor. This delightful evening featured a performance
dedicated to Haimes by Roundabout star and Tony Awardwinning singer and actor Laura Benanti. The event also
provided a chance for guests to learn from our honoree
how his involvement with the technical and production
sides of theater during his HM student years led directly to
his pursuit of theater and management studies in college
and graduate school, to his work in New York theater ever
since, and his leadership at the Roundabout beginning in
1983. HM alumni also got together on March 2, 2017 for our
fourth-annual HM Alumni Book Day Chat. We launched this
event in 2013 to enable alums to connect with HM's current
curriculum. The school's annual Book Day, now in its 23rd
year, is an important part of HM's Upper Division academic
year, and an event that has impacted many alumni.
As in past years, the HM Alumni Council will be focusing
our efforts on assisting students on financial aid through
the Student Lunch Initiative by dedicating the funds raised
at our Annual Alumni Council Benefit. The Student Lunch
Initiative provides free cafeteria meal cards for approximately 150 students in grades six through 12 who receive

financial aid. All student meal cards look the same, regardless of whether they are funded by a student's family or
through HM's financial aid office, providing an appropriate
level of privacy for those receiving assistance. As HM Head
of School Dr. Tom Kelly explains, our effort enables the
school "to increase scholarship aid. The ripple effect is felt
by the students."
This year's Alumni Council Benefit takes place on May
1, 2017, and promises to be a terrific event. We've changed
the program from our cocktail parties of recent years to a
bowling party at Bowlmor Lanes at Times Square, in a private Art Deco-themed bowling alley and lounge. You don't
have to be a bowler, or even bowl that night, to enjoy the
fun. Along with unlimited bowling we'll have music, delicious
appetizers, an open bar and a fantastic silent auction and
"Buy It Now" boutique. Please come for this great evening
where you can connect with HM alumni from across the
decades and reconnect with classmates and friends. The
Alumni Benefit is always enjoyable, and supporting the
Student Lunch Initiative is a great way to feel connected to
today's student body and to know your support is making a
difference to Horace Mann School.

CONNECT WITH HORACE MANN SCHOOL THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
Horace Mann School, the HM Alumni and Development Office and the Horace Mann Alumni Council (HMAC)
provide many ways for HM alumni to connect with one another and with the school all year long. Events include
Homecoming and Reunions in the fall and the annual HMAC Benefit each spring, a lively gathering that benefits
current HM students. Alumni are invited to participate in the HM Upper Division's annual Book Day, and prepare for
the day at an Alumni Book Day event. The annual Buzzel Game remains a highlight of HM's athletic year. Alumni are
also invited to cheer on HM Lions teams throughout the school year. The HM Alumni App connects the alumni community globally. The app serves as the HM Alumni Directory and also enables alums to look up other alumni by name,
class year, location, or industry, and to share news and network. Search for "Horace Mann Alumni" in the iTunes or
Google Play stores.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Horace Mann School's alumni have many opportunities to volunteer on behalf of their school. Among these are
serving as a Class Agent, a Class Correspondent, an Annual Fund Parent Grade Representative, or as a
