to Events and Reunions
A
s blue skies spread over Horace Mann School's Bronx campus,
replacing early morning clouds, first dozens, then hundreds,
and then a record-breaking number of nearly 5,000 members
of the HM community spread out around Alumni Field, Four Acres, and
into the school's gyms to watch games and enjoy the festivities of HM's
Homecoming on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Later that evening over
550 alumni gathered for class reunions in Manhattan.
The day had young guests enjoying face painting and bouncy castle
rides at the county fair-like gathering, while visitors of all ages viewed
an exhibit in HM's Fisher Hall Art Gallery and chowed down on the
hearty picnic spread of hot dogs, burgers, barbecued ribs, salad, ice
cream and apple cider donuts. Still others drove robots built by HM
students set up at an installation that showcased robotics classes now
offered at the school from the Nursery through Upper Divisions. All the
while HM sports fans cheered on the school's varsity Lions teams at
games throughout the day. The first crisp day of early fall energized HM
athletes competing outside in soccer (T 1-1), field hockey (L 1-4), cross

country, tennis (W 5-0), and football (W 13-12). Inside the school's gyms
a fan-fueled atmosphere followed the Girls Varsity Volleyball team to a
3-1 victory over Riverdale, and the Lions Varsity Water Polo team to a
13-8 win over Trinity.
Alumni come from near and far
"This is amazing," said Dr. Steven Sheppard '53 as he walked onto
campus early in the afternoon, in time to catch the Lions' Varsity Football
team warm up for its game against Newark Academy. "I was at home
this morning, and came across the mailing I got about Homecoming.
It was such a beautiful day I decided to come check it out. I never
thought there would be so many people here, or so much going on."
Dr. Sheppard, who lives near HM, walked toward the gleaming white
tent set up on the sidelines of Alumni Field and took in the groups of
maroon and white clad Upper Division students promoting such clubs
and activities as HM's Relay for Life and Manuscript literary magazine,
among others. Several hundred Middle and Upper Division students
