of the play in 2016. Benanti's performance was followed
by greetings from Horace Mann Head of School Dr. Tom
Kelly, who welcomed Haimes, his family and friends, and
guests, including previous HM Distinguished Alumni
Award recipients, HM parents, administrators, members of the HM Theatre, Dance and Film Department
faculty, and several HMTC alumni. Dr. Kelly wove the
titles of a number of plays presented by Roundabout
over the last three decades into his remarks. To the
laughter of audience members as they recognized
Roundabout play references, Dr. Kelly noted that, while
involved in theater as a student at HM Haimes chose to
work backstage "rather than to be The Entertainer or
Understudy or take part in The Rehearsal."
"By pursuing your passion with purpose, dedication, and profound courage, your life provides a Master
Class to us all," Dr. Kelly said, in a reference to another
Roundabout production. "We're so proud that you are
an HM Lion. But, since you're hardly a Lion in Winter we
wish you many, many more years of continuing success.
Please join me in wishing Todd Haimes-Hurrah, At Last!" Dr. Kelly urged
those gathered.
LePatner returned to the podium to present the award to Haimes,
explaining that he had been named this year's honoree after a careful
process. "This year, under the leadership of Bill Nightingale, Class of
1949, Mickey Littmann, Class of 1952, and Ephram Lustgarten, Class of
1996, a committee of members of the Alumni Council researched the
accomplishments of many of our fellow alumni and, over the course
of several meetings, came to the happy selection of Todd Haimes,"
LePatner said.
LePatner then shared Haimes' biography with the guests, noting
that after HM he went on to the University of Pennsylvania, and then
to the Yale School of Management where he was the only student
accepted straight out of university. "Todd credits getting his MBA as
'the single biggest factor' that has led to his career success," LePatner
said. "As he described it 'theater is a business like anything else; if you
can't meet the payroll, nothing else matters.'" As noted in the biography
that follows this article, after Yale Haimes spent a year at the Westport
Playhouse and then joined Roundabout in July 1983. The theater was
then in bankruptcy. Overseeing Roundabout's finances, marketing and
fundraising Haimes rescued it from closing forever, and transformed it
into the country's largest not-for-profit theater company in the country,
and a theater that regularly produces award-winning revivals, musicals
and new works.
"Under his leadership the Roundabout has been nominated for 36
Tony Awards, 50 Drama Desk Awards, 59 Outer Critic Circle Awards and
11 Obie Awards," said LePatner. "In Todd's HM yearbook during his senior

or the past 34 years Todd Haimes '74 has worked to bring audiences the finest theater presentations as Executive Director
and then Artistic Director/CEO of New York City's Roundabout
Theatre Company. In so doing he contributed both to NYC's cultural life
and stability, and expanded the theatrical canon for audiences worldwide. Haimes was recognized for these accomplishments with the
2016 Horace Mann School Alumni Association Award for Distinguished
Achievement, and presented with the award at a dinner in his honor on
December 5, 2016.
In accepting the award Haimes credited Horace Mann School with
introducing him to theater, when a friend encouraged him to work on a
play with the Horace Mann Theatre Company (HMTC) during his sophomore year. Haimes worked backstage for the HMTC production of How
to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The experience ignited his
passion for stage and theater management that he has pursued ever
since. But, as Haimes told the dinner guests, he valued Horace Mann
School not only for the opportunities it opened up for him, but also for
the education HM provided to his children, Dr. Hilary Haimes '05 and
Andrew Haimes '07.
Celebrating Todd Haimes
The celebratory dinner at the Lotte New York Palace in Manhattan
opened with a welcome from HM Alumni Association President Wesley
Mittman LePatner '99. LePatner then introduced special guest Tony
Award-winning stage, film and TV star Laura Benanti, who performed a
stunning rendition of the song "Ice Cream" from the play She Loves Me.
A close friend of Haimes Benanti starred in the Roundabout's production
