Memorials
H

orace Mann School records with sorrow the
deaths of the following graduates and members
of the HM community, and extends its sympathy
to all family and friends who have lost loved ones.
Memorials for deceased alumni listed below that do
not appear in this issue will appear in the next issue of
Horace Mann Magazine.

Robert J. Kaufman '38, Vice President
and General Attorney at ABC
Horace Mann School was deeply saddened by the death on October
30, 2016 of Robert J. (Bob) Kaufman at age 95. Active at HM as GA
president and three-time president of the Class of 1938 he went on to
Columbia College, graduating in 1942. At Columbia Bob was Phi Beta
Kappa, a member of the Senior Society of Sachems, and coxswain of
the Columbia Varsity Crew. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946
as a Lieutenant and a Communications Officer aboard a destroyer
escort. Kaufman graduated from Yale University Law School in 1948,
and was a member of Corbey Court. He began his professional career
as an associate with Gale, Bernays, Falk & Eisner and then became
Assistant General Counsel of the DuMont Broadcasting Corporation,
before becoming Vice President and General Attorney for the American
Broadcasting Company for many years. Bob frequently said that no one
enjoyed working for a living more than he did. Profiled in Who's Who in
America he was an enthusiastic golfer, a great fan of the Giants football
team and of Camp Kennebec. Bob Kaufman is survived by his devoted
wife of 65 years, Susan Sanger Kaufman, his sons and daughters-in-law
Peter S. and Theresa Kaufman and James H. and Teresa Kaufman and
his granddaughters Maddie Kate and Ruby Lee. He was predeceased by
his brothers Edwin P. Kaufman '35 and William E. Kaufman '43.

Larry Lowenstein '39, Former HM
Alumni and Development Director
Horace Mann School reports with sadness the death of Larry
Lowenstein '39 at his home in New York City on August 1, 2016 at the
age of 93. A 1943 graduate of Cornell University Lowenstein remained
devoted to his college alma mater, serving on its Alumni Association for
many years. In 1992 he was honored by Cornell with the establishment
of the Larry Lowenstein Cornell Tradition Fellowship and, in 1997, with
the university's Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award.
Upon his graduation from Cornell Lowenstein enlisted in the U.S.
Army, 82nd Airborne Division during WWII and served through 1946.
He then worked in various restaurant and food service operations in
NYC for 34 years with such iconic venues as the Hyde Park Restaurant
on Madison Avenue, the Post and Coach in the Port Authority Bus
Terminal, and operating the concessions on the Staten Island Ferry
boats. Involved with the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and on
the Board of the 92nd Street YM-YWHA Lowenstein was also involved
with the Interracial Council for Business Opportunity. He later served
as Dirctor of Development at the Ethical Culture School in Manhattan.

He was a member and then president of the HM Alumni Council. In 1981
Larry returned to Horace Mann School as Director of the HM Alumni
and Development Office, through July 1998. Lowenstein's family wrote:
"Everyone he met loved him for his warmth, his friendship, and his wit.
He left his mark on this world in the most meaningful way a person can
do, by caring always about others, whether family, friends, and those he
never met whose causes he championed through a lifetime. Years ago,
he left his family instructions concerning his wishes upon passing, but
he said he wasn't planning on leaving this earth until Cornell won an Ivy
League football title. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, which is probably
the only regret he had when he left us. Donations should be made to the
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence or Cornell University. Larry
Lowenstein is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marie, and children Kenneth '67, Douglas, and Nancy Rancatore, six grandchildren, and
three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Allard K.
Lowenstein '45 and sister, former HM tennis coach Dorothy DiCintio.

Herbert Hirsch '42,
Attorney Specializing in Art Law
Condolences are expressed on the death of Herbert Hirsch '42 on
October 9, 2015. Hirsch graduated from Brown University and Columbia
University Law School, and served in the Navy during World War II
between degrees. Hirsch joined the N.Y. law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris,
Shriver, and Jacobson where he specialized in corporate and art law
and became a partner. Passionate about art law he served as Chair of
the Art Law Committee of the NYC Bar Association, and was a longtime member of The International Foundation for Art Research. He is
survived by sons Laurence and Dennis, daughters-in-law Alice, Suzanne,
and Mary, five grandchildren, his sister-in-law Peggy Hirsch and
brother-in-law Jack Shore. He was pre-deceased by his much-loved son
Ted, his brother Bernard (Bud) Hirsch '46 and sister Edith.

Allen Roeter '45,
Longtime Giftique, Ltd. Owner
With sadness we report the death of Allen K. Roeter '45 of Osprey, Fla.
and formerly of Stamford, Conn. on February 20, 2016 after a 15-year
battle with cancer. Roeter graduated from Ohio State University and
was the longtime owner of the popular store Giftique, Ltd. in Stamford.
Allen's family wrote: "He was known by many residents as 'the nice man
from Giftique.' He loved sailing on the Long Island Sound, skiing in the
Rockies, and white water rafting down the Colorado River with his family. He was a gentle and kind man who will be greatly missed by all who
knew him." Married for 62 years to Elaine Tralins Roeter, Allen Roeter
is survived by daughters Eve (and John) Madigan and Holly (and Todd)
Grounds, and by three grandchildren.

Alan B. Jonas '48, Vice President at
Bankers Trust
Horace Mann School regrets to note the passing of Alan B. Jonas '48
of Boca Raton, Fla. on February 25, 2016. Jonas was a graduate of
Lafayette College and served in the Army in Germany from 1952-1954.
He pursued a career in banking as a loan officer and was a Vice
President at Bankers Trust. Retiring in 1992 he then pursued his interest
in golf. Alan Jonas was predeceased by his loving wife Barbara, and was
the devoted father of Daniel Jonas '79 and Lori Jonas, father-in-law of
