Memorials

Alexandra Baboulis '87, Dedicated
Special Education Teacher
Horace Mann School mourns the death of Alexandra Baboulis '87 on
June 7, 2016 following her battle with cancer. A graduate of Barnard
College she acquired her Masters in Special Education and became a
teacher who devoted herself to teaching under-resourced students.
Family members wrote: "She strived to make an impact in the world,
and fought all ideas of convention. Being different is what she was
good at, and she was loved and appreciated for that. She is survived
by her mother Thelma, her sister Sharon, her brothers Philip and Paul,
her nephews Richie and Jaxon, and her niece Stephanie. She was the
godmother to Robert, Joel, and Johana, and friend to their mother
Wendy, all who loved her dearly. She was loved and taken care of by her
boyfriend Richard, who was by her side 'til the end." The family asked
that donations "be made to the American Cancer Society to support
those who continue fighting this arduous battle. Her spirit, her thirst for
life, her unconditional love, and her genuineness will keep her memory
alive in our hearts for eternity."

Craig Yankwitt '93,
Crusading Attorney
With sadness Horace Mann School reports the
passing of Craig Yankwitt '93 on September 5,
2016 following a battle with brain cancer. Craig
was a 1997 graduate of Cornell University and
a 2002 graduate of Cornell Law School. Ian
Yankwitt '85 wrote of his brother, "Craig woke
up every day thinking about what he could give
to the world-to his family, his friends, or the person working the
drive-through window. Even at the end, his first words were always
asking how you were doing." Craig Yankwitt's colleague Mark Sherman
at Law Offices of Mark Sherman memorialized Craig as follows: "He was
a tremendous lawyer-combining compassion and advocacy in a
manner that set him far apart from and above his litigation colleagues.
He was one of those rare guys who was dialed in to you when you were
in front of him. Never checking his phone; never looking around; never
distracted. He listened and processed and cared ... This was probably
what made him so successful in his law practice, as well as in his trials
and negotiations. Craig was one of the few lawyers of my generation
who loved this profession and didn't begrudge it for the long hours and
(oftentimes) little reward. He relished the opportunities to help people
when they needed it most. He had the unique smarts and sensitivity to
prevail in personal injury law-being able to litigate very technical legal
and medical issues, yet at the same time have the ability to patiently
counsel clients through the emotional turbulence of a lengthy litigation
during a trying time in their life. Most important to Craig was that he
was almost always fighting for an under-dog of some kind-a victim of a
crime or neglect, or someone who was somehow wronged." Craig
Yankwitt is survived by his wife Angel Crain, son Jude, his father George
Yankwitt and brothers Ian '85 (and Rochelle) Yankwitt and Russell (and
Deborah) Yankwitt, nieces Ruthie '18 and Shayna Yankwitt and nephews
Casey and Aden Yankwitt. He was predeceased, in 2003, by his mother
Adrienne, and is also mourned by George Yankwitt's wife Mary Chang.

Memorials: Former HM Faculty

Robert Leonhardt, former HM French
Teacher and Head, Foreign Languages
Department
Horace Mann School was deeply saddened by the death of Robert
(Bob) Michael Leonhardt on April 6, 2016 of complications from
amyloidosis. A former French teacher at HM from 1986 to 1991 he
returned to the school from 2012 to 2014 to serve as Chair of Foreign
Languages and help reorganize the Language Department. In between
he served for a decade as Head of the French-American School of
New York (FASNY) in Westchester. Dr. David Schiller, former Head of
the HM Upper Division, described Leonhardt, his close friend, in an
article in The Record as "a great teacher ... Demanding and kind, he
understood the nature of the subject and how to make it accessible
to students. Bob's intelligence went deeply into his character. It was
a way of thinking that was, with him, a way of life." Bob Leonhardt's
family memorialized him as follows: "Born in New York on November 8,
1943, to Esther and Rene Leonhardt, he developed enduring interests
as a young man: languages and literature, especially French, as well
as politics and family. He studied at Trinity, Choate, Harvard, Columbia
and L'Ecole Normale Superieure. He became active in the 1960s and
1970s in the movements against racism and the Vietnam War. He spoke
French as natives do, was fond of quoting La Fontaine's fables and
listened to thousands of hours of jazz, often while cooking for family. He
taught-and made many friends-at Horace Mann, Fieldston, Rodeph
Sholom and the public schools in Mamaroneck and Newton, Mass. ...
Bob was an adored husband, father, grandfather and friend. He and
Joan Alexander Leonhardt were married for 47 years, a partnership
that is a model for those around them. Their children-Robin Peterson
'94 and her husband, Eric, of Denver; and David Leonhardt '90 and his
wife, Laura, of Bethesda, Md.,-were the center of Bob's life. He was
also beloved by his five grandchildren, Jonah, Felix, Cordelia, Eva and
Beatrix..." Bob Leonhardt's cousins, nieces and nephews included HM
alumni Rabbi Emily Korzenik '46 and nephews Jeremy Korzenik '70,
Josh Korzenik '75, Alexander Posner '13 and Daniel Posner '18.
