Shakespeare was no challenge for HM's youngsters, but an
exciting step along their academic adventure.
Before introducing her version of "The Tempest" to HM
students Meredith sent her script to the RSC's Gartside
for a final review. "This is wonderful," Gartside responded.
"Your plans are exactly what we are all hoping for from our
partnership. It is a privilege to work with you."
With parents intrinsic to the educational partnership

Lower Division Head Wendy Steinthal and LD Head Deena
Neuwirth to receive a letter from a parent who "wanted
to share ... how incredibly impressed I have been with the
introduction of the Shakespeare curriculum in the first
grade." Reporting that her daughter came home "brimming
over with enthusiasm about 'The Tempest'" the parent continued: "She loved learning about the story and acting out
scenes in pantomime while the teachers read the dialogue.
She was full of questions about the characters, the
plot, and Shakespeare himself ... It is clear that the
methods employed in introducing young children
to these great works have been extremely effective in exciting them, inspiring them and enriching their learning, inside the classroom and out. I
hope that HM continues to grow this exceptional
program. I can only imagine the wonderful possibilities in the years to come."
As the HM-RSC partnership continues into
its second full year, Horace Mann School shares
these hopes, looking forward to expanding this
program, and to an all-school Shakespeare
production planned for the coming school year.
Above all, the Royal Shakespeare Company and
Horace Mann School hope to nurture in HM
students a love of learning Shakespeare, and a
love of learning, as enduring as the words of the
Bard, himself. $
