Class Notes
income families. My younger daughter Rachel is
a rising artist with shows around the world.
Fifteen years ago my wife and I were given a
monastery in Garrison, N.Y., which we turned
into The Garrison Institute, with the mission of
connecting the wisdom of the world's contemplative traditions with environmental and social
action. She has become a leader in the relief of
vicarious trauma for domestic violence shelter
workers, humanitarian aid workers, inner city
school teachers etc. And my company
continues to grow. And there is so much
suffering around the world-chaos throughout
the Middle East, the rise of fundamentalism, the
growing impacts of climate change, rising
income inequity. There is much for us to do
while we are still vital." Eric Wachtel writes:
"Dear Frank, Thanks again for getting in touch.
I'm sorry to have missed the reunion, but have
really enjoyed hearing about everyone. Thanks
for all the great work you do to keep us
connected. Yes, I recently had the chance to be
part of an email exchange with Andy Ansorge,
Ken Flatto, Jeff Wachtel, and David Wollins, and
then, separately, with Gene Lipman. Wonderful
memories, and great to connect again. No
major news on my end. Still working in the
administration at Northwestern and living on
the near north side in Chicago. With a long
career now at a Big Ten school, I've become an
avid collegiate sports fan, for both the major
and 'non-revenue' sports. I guess it's not that
far away from playing touch football at HM.
Thanks again, Frank, for keeping us together.
Hope to join you for future events. Best wishes,
Eric." Stuart Feld wrote, "Hi Frank, Thanks for
reaching out. My last reunion was the 10th. Over
the years I graduated from Fordham Law,
practiced law for Stroock and Stroock, and
then Robinson, Silverman, the latter of which
merged with Bryan Cave. I then went into my
own business developing residential property
in the Lower East Side and was actually the first
sponsor of a co-op down there. When my father
contracted terminal cancer I joined him in his
commercial painting company in 1984 and have
been doing that ever since. Bond Painting
Company, named after a childhood hero ... I've
been married for 30 years and have two
daughters, both of whom are working in
Manhattan. My wife and I live in Riverside, Conn.
and have a place in Manhattan as well. Whew!
Probably more than you expected. Say hello to
Steve Bauer for me, I remember him well.
Thanks again, Stuart." After the October 2015
Class of 1970 Frank followed-up with this letter:
"We just finished a rousing evening of friendship and togetherness. Thirty alums attended
plus 11 spouses, significant others and
girlfriends. Alumni Attendees were: (David)
Alexander, Baldwin, (Steven) Bauer, (Martin)
Bienenstock, (Jeff) Chusid, (Michael) Faust,
(Nigel) FeBland, (Jerome) Feldman, (Steven)
Fink, (Michael) Halperin, (Walter) Harris,
(Peter) Joseph, (Jonathan) Kahn, (Dan) Klein,
(Jerome) Korzenik, (Scott) Lawrence, Lipman,
Lowe, (Daniel) Moss, (Robert) Nussbaum,
(Thomas) Nutman, (Eric/Ricky) Queen, (Alan)
Rosenberg, (Clifford) Salm, (Doug) Schoen,
(Joshua) Tannenbaum, (Oscar) Taube,
(Richard) Trifan, (Jonathan) Victor and Elliot
Konopko (an interloper from 1971). Tom
Nutman made his first reunion appearance
since the 10th. Jeff Chusid attended his first
reunion ever. Special kudos to him. He was
particularly glad to have reconnected. The
room at The Princeton Club was filled with
constant chatter. Posters of pictures from our
30th reunion at Miles' apartment, our 35th
reunion at McCormick and Schmicks (Ricky
Jurmark's restaurant,) and our 40th at The
Cornell Club were displayed. Ozzie brought his
copy of The Mannikin. Several of the Senior
profiles were read by Alan Rosenberg. After a
wonderful cocktail hour of re-connecting, our
class photo was taken. Barbara Tannenbaum
took the class photo. (More versions of this
photo appear online at: https://picasaweb.

Then I made some welcoming remarks
thanking everyone for attending. After the salad
course, Doug Schoen gave us a short commentary and update on the upcoming elections.
After dinner, many of us spoke about our
wonderful kinship in the class, our wonderful
education we had and the sorrow of the recent
scandals from our era. Jon Victor, Tom Nutman,
Dan Baldwin, Jeremy Korzenik, Richard Trifan,
Marty Bienstock, Neil Feldman, Peter Halperin,
Danny Moss all stood up and spoke. Danny
announced that he was to attend Amar
Hansen's wedding in India in November 2015.
After that we remembered our departed
classmates: John Trinkaus, Joe Featherstone,
David Weisberg, Tara Hansen and Bob
Morrison. (Editor's Note: Ed Townsend has
since passed away and will be memorialized in
the next issue of Horace Mann Magazine.) Bob
Nussbaum read his blog about attending his
reunion. Jon Oberman sent me a letter which I
read as well. The evening concluded with a
singing of the Alma Mater, led by Trifan, Chusid,
Feldman, Bauer (those guys were in the choir)
and me. It was sung with gusto by everyone
there. The festivities broke up shortly after 10
p.m. Many lingered in the lobby and in the street
continuing the conversations. An after-party
was held at Fitzpatrick's Hotel. The following
members of the class hung out until almost 1
a.m: Bauer, Bienenstock, FeBland, Lois FeBland,
Feldman, Klein, Korzenik, Lowe, Queen,
Rosenberg, Taube. What a great evening! I am
sorry that more of you were not there to have
enjoyed the experience. However, our 50th is
just around the corner. I am blessed to have so
many good friends from the class of 1970!
Peace and good health. Frank"
Richard Trifan did a concert recital at the
Kennedy Center on Feb 28, 2016 of 10 arias
from the first opera of his "Global Opera."
Trifan is also writing an opera about Crazy
Horse which he described as combining "the
classic approach of music and theatre (which
is opera) with the Native Americans' continuing battle against invasion, where the faint
drums come up 'within the orchestra' showing
the strife between the European and American
cultures. I hope to put the focus on how Crazy
Horse tried to unite the tribes, and how/why
they had differences, just as we do today. I am
sure he was the Mandela of his time," Trifan
wrote. Richard is also the music collaborator
on a project that Victor Masayesva is doing
with the Nova series on PBS.
