out delivery trucks. It was another kink thrown into the business
plan, but we keep charging forward."
Fresh from the Farm Confidence

Contoocook Creamery has coined the slogan, "Fresh From our
Family's Farm to your Family's Table," and Jamie says this is hugely
important to the farm's customers. "People want to buy milk with
confidence that it just came fresh from our farm to the store," he
explains.
To show off this high level of traceability, Bohanan Farm has
opened its doors to the public. "We've found that giving customers
this open-door option lets them see how it's done and why we need
to charge a little more. This really satisfies the customer. We haven't
had flocks of people either-most people are just happy to know it's
an option, even if they don't follow through with a visit."
The farm is now bottling 1,500 to 1,600 fluid gallons a week through
Smiling Hill Farm. "The rest of our fluid milk goes to a wholesale
cooperative and we have a portion that we're turning into different
flavors of cheddar cheese working with Grafton Cheese. We have
aged cheddar, maple-smoked, garlic, and jalapeƱo cheddar," says
Jamie.
Customers can find the creamery's milk in 15 local Hannaford
chains and about 50 independent stores, including farmer's markets
and orchards throughout southern New Hampshire. "Our blueberry
milk is a good seller. It tastes like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of
Fruit Loops," laughs Jamie. "Chocolate milk is also a big hit and we
sell coffee-flavored milk."
"What surprised us is whole milk is actually our top seller. We
thought skim would be more popular, but we've learned that people
who are looking to spend a little extra on milk are going to buy whole
milk," adds Jamie. "We sell about a 2 to 1 whole milk to skim ratio,
which is interesting to note."
Jamie says glass bottling has allowed Contoocook Creamery to
enter stores without having to compete with the big guys on the shelf.
"There are already too many plastic bottle milk choices in stores," he
says. "We went with glass because it helps us stand out."
As far as outsourcing bottling to Smiling Hill Farm, Jamie says that
