was the best option starting out. "We chose a bottler while we focus on
building our market share," he says. "We hope to have our own processing
plant in the near future, but right now we're working on getting there. The
end goal is to process our fluid milk on the farm ourselves."
Ties That Bind

For now, it's all hands on deck while Contoocook Creamery continues to
build business. "Now that Si and Nate are out of college, and taking over
some of the farm management responsibilities, and our niece Meagan is
working on marketing and social media for the creamery, Heather and I
have been able to better concentrate on getting both businesses running
more smoothly," says Jamie. "When our sales first started to take off it
was a challenge to balance the retail business without letting things slip on
the farm, but the kids coming back have been a huge help."
"My father-in-law, Glenn Bohanan is still involved on the farm side.
He feeds the cows on weekends, and helps with crops. We also have
two milkers, a calf feeder, egg packer, and a mechanic on staff. On the
creamery side, we also have three part-time drivers," notes Jamie.
The Bohanan Farm continues to rely on strong business partnerships,
such as a long-running relationship with Phoenix Feeds & Nutrition in
New Haven, Vermont. "We've been with Phoenix Feeds from the start,"
says Jamie. "They offer unmatched technical, nutritional, and overall
support."
Strong partnerships and family ties are essential in a business that can
be different day in and day out. "It's not guaranteed to go smoothly;
sometimes you just have to stick it out," says Jamie, reflecting on the
challenges of startup. "Times change and you have to make adjustments if
you want to stay in business in today's market."
As the Contoocook Creamery commences its sixth year of bottling,
one thing is for certain: Jamie and Heather are keeping their promise to
maintain the fifth-generation family farm and deliver fresh, wholesome
milk from cows raised in the Contoocook River Valley.
