FROM THE UK TO THE US:
PHOENIX'S FIRST INTERN
By Beth Wyld

M

y name is Beth Wyld. I am a BSc Animal Science Student
from Newcastle University, UK. I grew up in rural Northumberland, the northernmost county in England. Although my
family has never farmed, I would consider myself from a 'farming
background' having spent many school holidays working on local
farms and being heavily involved in the farming community. A
community similar to that here in Vermont.
From a very young age I have been exposed to an open conversation about where my food comes from and I would count
myself fortunate in this. As I have gone through my education I
have always had an interest in science and its ability to change the
way we see our world.

After finishing high school I decided to travel the world before
heading on to further education, something that soon became a
passion of mine. This experience developed my enthusiasm for
food production to a global level, having at this point travelled in
Africa, Thailand, New Zealand, and Australia.
I truly believe that my generation has a big part to play in the role
of the agricultural industry in food security, sustainability, and in
an environmentally-conscious world. I wanted to be a part of it! It
wasn't so clear to me in what way or how to get there, but a degree
in Animal Science seemed like a good step forward. So from there
I spent two years at Newcastle University. Throughout my studies
my passion and interest developed toward the nutrition side of the
course, narrowing down my thoughts on a potential career path.
However, as I headed into the end of my second year I decided I
wanted some wider experience before completing my final year at
Newcastle University. In one way or another this led me to an ex-

change year at the University of Vermont (UVM).
So why Vermont? In 2013 I had my first experience of Vermont
whilst I was out here visiting my aunt and her family. I love the
outdoors and Vermont has a lot to offer in that respect so that was
definitely a big draw. Secondly, through my studies and travels I
had developed an interest in dairy, so again Vermont appeared to
be a great option. Thirdly, UVM's animal science program offered
a wide range of courses and had many research areas of interest.
My Phoenix journey began at the end of my first semester at
UVM. I had emailed David Santos, the company's president, after
researching their website, and expressed an interest in any form of
experience they could offer. I never expected it to escalate to the
great opportunity that it has become. From my first conversation
with David I was inspired by the core values of the company and
excited about the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the feed
industry through an internship with Phoenix Feeds & Nutrition.
January 2018 couldn't come quickly enough!
The opportunity to rotate around every department in a business
such as Phoenix has been a great learning experience and I am
only halfway through. I am enjoying stepping out of my comfort
zone, trying to learn something new from everyone I meet. I hope
that in my time with Phoenix I can be of some value in return,
more so than just teaching Jim Walsh (Phoenix's Quality Control
Manager) some English phrases!
