It's Your

HISTORY
Missouri State Museum shares
pieces of a lifetime

hen Missouri's Capitol burned in
1911, it would be two years before
ground was broken for a new Statehouse. Plans for a new building included "two great museums on either side of the rotunda and extending through two stories ... devoted
Jefferson
respectively to history and to natural resources."
City
Tiffany Patterson, director of the Missouri State
Museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site
in Jefferson City loves sharing Missouri's story.
"It's pretty amazing that I get paid to study Missouri's history," Tiffany says, walking through the museum located on
the first floor of the Capitol.
"By 1917, the building was essentially complete, with two empty galleries
waiting to become a museum," she says. "But at that time, Missouri's General
Assembly only met every other year, and session ended May 1917. So legislators
wouldn't meet again until January 1919."
With World War I over, Missouri's legislators wanted to honor the Missourians who served. The group passed a bill in 1919 establishing the Soldiers and
Sailors' Memorial Hall, located in the east wing of the Capitol. The completion of
the Resources Hall in the west wing in 1921 completed what is now the Missouri
State Museum. Both wings combine Missouri's history, people and resources.
Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., year-round (minus major holidays), the free museum
packs in more than 150,000 visitors each year.
"It gets a little crazy from March to May," Tiffany adds, noting 35,000 of
those visitors are school kids.
"Last year, the museum hosted nearly 100 educational programs," she says.
That number includes museum events, outreach to schools or other groups as
well as at Lohman's Landing, located down the hill from the Capitol.
There's a little something for everyone at the museum. One popular current display is "Here at Home: Missouri in the Great War," which even has a
special Raggedy Ann Trail of footsteps showing young visitors how World War
I changed Missouri and the world. Others include "Anglo-Southern Religion:
Old-Time Preaching and Dinner on the Ground" and "The First Missourians:
Missourians who helped win the West." There are displays of goods made by
Missourians, such as an Arion-Harp zither, made in 1904 by Washington, Missouri woodworker Franz Schwarzer.
Another popular item on display in the Resource Hall includes the stagecoach used on the Des Moines/Palmyra mail run.
While an exhibit might be on display for months, items are often swapped in
and out, keeping visits to the museum "new" for viewers.
"It takes a team constantly researching and working to keep things fresh,"
Tiffany says, noting most exhibits are changed about every six months.
One person who probably knows everything the museum owns works across
town in a climate-controlled environment.
"We have about 35,000 pieces in our possession, which actually isn't that
much," says Katherine Owens, who has served as curator of collections for the
museum for the past 13 years. "I've probably touched everything at least once."
Katherine is based at the Riverside Collections Facility where museum pieces
are stored and exhibits are built. "It's like Christmas every day," she says. "You
might sort coins, gloves, pistols, you name it. It all has to be organized."
The items are stored in pods (rooms) which are kept at an appropriate temperature for the materials being stored.
One storage pod houses the museum's flag collection, the oldest dating back
to the Seminole Wars in 1830. They also have more than 130 Civil War battle
flags, of which 50 or so have been preserved. Another grouping consists of
nearly 100 World War I Blue/Gold star service banners, donated by counties in
Missouri to honor those who served and died during the war.
"Museums bring history together collectively for people. You can see the
blood stains on their clothing, handwritten documents, weapons they held in
battle," says Katherine. "It truly is your history."
The Missouri State Museum, located in the Capitol in Jefferson City, is open 8
a.m. to 5 p.m., daily (except New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas)
and is free to tour. For more information, call 573-751-2854 or follow the museum
