THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI LINEBACKER WAS SURROUNDED BY 21 OTHER players and seven referees on Farrout Field. More than 50,000 fans were packed into Memorial Stadium watching the play unfold. But Cale knew something that seemingly no one else did. South Carolina quarterback Ryan Hilinski retrieved a batted pass he had thrown and almost immediately spiked it to the ground in an attempt to end the play. The referees blew their whistles, the fans cheered and all but one of the players eased up. Cale was that player. He thought the spike attempt was a backwards pass - making the ball careening around the end zone live - and ran through all the other players to collect his 6-point reward.
