Suppliers like Networkfleet are working to give fleet owners more data without adding more complexity.

This desire to have all sorts of information without overloading personnel is a common thread in many industries. In telematics, suppliers are working to develop human-machine interfaces that let drivers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, and others get the data they want in a timely fashion. Usefulness and efficiency have become watchwords in this industry. “This is the challenge for telematics companies—providing increased volumes of data in an easy-to-use way,” said Chris Ransom, Director of Sales Engineering for Networkfleet, a subsidiary of Hughes Telematics. “The industry is moving out of basic telematics and

into advanced usage and increased granularity.”

Room to grow

While many fleet owners have employed telematics, it is still a fairly new field. Two European studies by Frost & Sullivan highlight the limited size. One found that only 542 million telematics units were sold in 2010, a number that will more than double to 1.3 billion in 2017. Another survey found that less than 5% of about 2.3 million trailers were equipped with telematics links. That connection rate will rise to 18% by 2017, Frost & Sullivan predicted. Achieving this growth will take a fair
