Data collection
made easy

Telenor feels standards will simplify setup of telematics systems.

Telematics hardware gathers data from a range of networks throughout a vehicle and trailer, sending it to dispatchers or maintenance staffs. (Networkfleet) the benefits of this communication is that many applications can be used to manage data. Standards bodies have stepped in to ensure the compatibility of many programs. For example, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) produces globally applicable standards for information and communications technologies. One of ETSI’s groups focuses on machine-tomachine (M2M) communications. “I think the first big hurdle for any company to enter the telematics/connected world is the investment in the first implementation and setup,” said Andrea Sroczynski, Head of Global Automotive and Truck Sales at Telenor Connexion AB. “Our suggestion is to follow the ETSI M2M standardization program. By doing this, the first hurdle for implementation can be minimized and therefore a quicker return of invest can be achieved.”

Let’s work together

Once hardware has been installed, companies have to be sure that all their software works well together. Data must be arranged in formats that can be read by all programs, and software packages must be able to share files without causing reliability issues or other problems. Though fleet owners will typically get their services from a single supplier, most suppliers will employ software written at least in part by third-party providers. As with the Internet, one of
