VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SECURITY COMMITTEE DEVELOPING CYBERSECURITY STANDARDS
(Adapted from an article which
previously appeared in SAE Update)
The SAE Vehicle Electrical System
Security (Cybersecurity) Committee
is developing several cybersecurityrelated standards. Created specifically
to foster automotive industry
cooperation on the topic, the committee
includes members from OEMs,
suppliers, academia, and regulatory
organizations.
The committee's scope is on-board
vehicle electrical systems that affect
vehicle control or otherwise act
contrary to the occupants' interests
if the systems are manipulated by an
attacker. The committee's goal is to
develop Recommended Practices and
Information Reports which identify and
recommend strategies and techniques
related to preventing and detecting
adversarial breaches, and mitigating
undesirable effects if a breach is
achieved.
The group will classify attack methods,
propose preventative strategies, define
levels of security by criticality of system
type, and identify architecture-level
strategies for mitigating attacks.
The committee's Automotive Security
Guidelines and Risk Development Task
Force is currently completing work on
J3061©, "Cybersecurity Guidebook for
Cyber-Physical Automotive Systems."
The committee also has an active
Vehicle Electrical Hardware Security
Task Force working to identify
requirements for hardware security
solutions, understand current offerings
and identify potential gaps. This task
force is also working to identify a
proposed standardized set of firmware
functionality. It will also work with other
relevant organizations and standardsdevelopment organizations working
in this area in order to commonize
requirements wherever possible.
In response to NHTSA's open Request for Comments, Ford submitted this diagram showing
potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
SAE BATTELLE CYBERAUTO CHALLENGE TO BE HELD IN JULY
The SAE Battelle CyberAuto Challenge will be held July 13-17 at Delphi Automotive's
headquarters in Troy, Michigan.
The Challenge is a week-long (5 day) practicum-based STEM education workshop - a series of
classroom lessons and discussions alternating with hands-on work with real cars, real equipment,
real communications protocols, and real industry experts working on teams with high school and
college students. Teams are comprised equally of students and professionals, including automotive
engineers, government engineers, and ethical "white hat" hackers.
Attracting representatives from every concerned sector of cybersecurity - including researchers,
hackers, government officials, manufacturers, educators and students, the CyberAuto Challenge
has been breaking new ground in automotive cybersecurity for the past three years. It has been
mentioned in the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers' responses to the U.S. Congress as one
of three events that automakers go to in order to understand cybersecurity.
"SAE is pleased to partner with Battelle on the CyberAuto Challenge," said Andrew Smart,
Director Society Programs and Industry Relations, SAE International. "SAE is working with
industry, government, and academia to develop cybersecurity standards for connected vehicles,
supporting information sharing between stakeholders and creating a talent pipeline for the
automotive industry in this critical new area."
SAE is looking for engineers to join teams, technical experts to teach on-site courses and financial
support to create an immersive, relevant environment for learning in the development of the future
cyberauto workforce. Sponsorships are new for 2015, enabling students of all economic levels
to participate by offsetting expenses associated with accommodations, meals, transportation,
learning materials, hardware kits, and other tools necessary to participant in the Challenge.
