NEW STANDARDS PROVIDES COMMON LANGUAGE FOR HOW PEOPLE AND AUTOMATION DRIVE
SAE Recommended Practice J2944: "Operational Definitions
of Driving Performance Measures and Statistics" has been
published. SAE J2944 is a foundational document providing
driving performance operational definitions for on-road
vehicles operated by a driver, automatically driven (selfdriving), or operated by shared control.
Based on such documents as the AASHTO Green Book, the
Highway Capacity Manual, and the Manual of Uniform Traffic
Control Devices, this 170+ page recommended practice defines
more than 80 terms related to driving (i.e, lane departure, gap,
headway, etc.) and is intended to help industry avoid the often
misleading, inconsistent, and confusing use of such terms.
"This recommended practice was written to advance global
mobility, which is SAE International's core mission," said Paul
Green, Research Professor at the University of Michigan and
Sponsor of J2944 under the Safety and Human Factors Steering
Committee. "Progress in science and engineering depends
upon having a common language for exchanging ideas, be it the
metric system, or this recommended practice."
SAE 2944 provides guidance in the use of the definitions, as
well as key studies and representative data in which they are
used. While use of the recommended practice will be required
in many contexts, the guidance included in the document as well
as its ease of use will serve to encourage its reference anywhere
universally accepted definitions and terms are needed.
