Ground Vehicle Standards Newsletter - July 2015 - 6

COMMITTEES SEEKING MEMBERS
The Light Vehicle Exterior Sound Level Standards Committee,
part of the Vehicle Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council,
is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE standards,
recommended practices and information reports related to
the measurement of sound levels in passenger cars and light
trucks including pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles. While
the sound measurement techniques have remained constant
for a number of years, changes in the vehicle powertrain
configurations require updates to ensure comparable operating
methods for the variety of products. The committee reviews
the technical validity of any governmental regulations
promulgated by the United States or other countries where U.S.
products are being sold. Participants in the SAE Light Vehicle
Exterior Sound Level Standards Committee include OEMs,
suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested
parties. The committee meets four times and a year and is
looking for expertise in vehicle noise related to tires, heavy

trucks, or motorcycles. For more information, contact Jana
Wright at jwright@sae.org.
The Cooling Systems Standards Committee is seeking
industry volunteers to contribute their subject matter expertise
to develop content for J3096, "Cooling System Caps and
Filler Necks -Non-Metallic, Threaded Construction." This
new Recommended Practice will describe standard critical
attributes such as dimensions for Cooling System Caps that
are used for Radiators and Surge Tanks. This Recommended
Practice will permit common Interfaces and reduce costs.
While primarily developed for passenger car and truck
application, it may be used in marine, industrial, and similar
applications. Specific OEM or supplier experience with radiator
Caps would be beneficial. Please contact jcollins@sae.org for
additional information on joining this standards effort.

KOCHHAR ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF SAE MOTOR VEHICLE COUNCIL
(Adapted from an article that previously appeared in SAE Update)
Nand Kochhar, Global Safety Systems Chief Engineer and
Executive Technical Leader, Simulation at Ford Motor Company,
was elected as new Chairman of the SAE International Motor
Vehicle Council for the 2015-2016 term.
Kochhar was a founding member of Ford's Technology
Advisory Board, chaired by the Chief Technical Officer. Prior
to this, he held the position of Chief Engineer, Materials
Engineering & Standards.
Since joining the company in 1990 as a Design Engineer, he
went on to hold several positions of increasing responsibility
including Chief Engineer, Vehicle Engineering and Chief
Engineer, CAE & Durability Engineering, and Platform Vehicle
Engineering Manager for F-Series Super Duty Truck. He is
the President of Ford Asian Indian Association (FAIA), a key
employee resource group supported by the Ford Diversity and
Inclusion initiative.
"As the great Edwards Deming said, 'If you control an industry's
standards, you control that industry lock, stock and ledger,'"
Kochhar said. "My Council colleagues and I look forward to
lead SAE's automotive standardization process and contribute
to higher quality of automotive products and processes."

Kochhar made substantial
contributions to the 1994
SAE International Truck & Bus
Meeting & Exposition. He
began serving on the Motor
Vehicle Council in 2012 and
was appointed Vice Chairman
in 2014.
Bruce Smith, Director of
Driveline Engineering at
General Motors will serve as
the Motor Vehicle Council
Vice Chairman. Smith joined the Hydramatic Division of
General Motors in 1989 and has held various positions within
Powertrain, Vehicle Integration and Chassis Engineering.
The SAE Motor Vehicle Council serves industry, consumers,
government, and the public by providing Technical Reports
(Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports)
that contribute to the improvement of the overall performance,
convenience, and safety of passenger car and light truck
transportation and assist in the development of vehicles,
systems, and components. It also is the role of the MVC to
strategically guide the development of such Technical Reports.
