DSRC COMMITTEE CHAIR, VICE CHAIR, LEAD AWARD-WINNING PROJECT
A project spearheaded by two members of SAE International's
DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) Committee has
been recognized with a "Best of ITS" Award, presented by the
Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America).
Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and Honda R&D Americas,
Inc. received the award for "Best New Innovative Practice -
Research, Design and Innovation" for their project "Honda and
Qualcomm DSRC-based Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) and Other
Vulnerable Road User Safety Project."
DSRC Committee Chair James A. Misener, Director of
Technical Standards at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., and DSRC
Vice Chair Sue Bai, Principal Engineer at Honda R&D Americas
Inc. received the award, which honors the most innovative,
effective, and influential achievements in the Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) industry.
The project, a unique collaboration between a leading vehicle
manufacturer and a leading smartphone chipset supplier,
focused on how the smartphone could be used positively
in a safety equation that involves vehicles and DSRC. The
project was the first time a real commercial smartphone was
enabled by DSRC, and it opens the door to pedestrian safety
applications that can talk and listen to cars, and allow cars to
talk and listen to pedestrians.
Through the work of Misener and Bai on SAE's DSRC committee,
Honda and Qualcomm are leading efforts to standardize the
communication message to protect vulnerable road users (such
as road workers, bicyclists and wheelchair users).
The DSRC committee currently has six documents in
development, including the J2945© series of documents
which will specify the minimum communication performance
requirements of the DSRC message sets, and the associated
data frames and data elements defined in SAE J2735™ (DSRC
Message Set Dictionary). Each section of the document series
will describe a specific message set's requirements.

ENGINEERING AIDS FROM SAE
SAE provides products that support testing procedures set forth in SAE Standards,
Recommended Practices, Information Reports, and other SAE documents including
the OSCAR H-Point Machine, which is used in the design of seating and interior packages
and in conjunction with SAE J 826 (rev. 1995), FMVSS regulations, and ISO standards-
making it the required design and auditing tool for current production.
Also available is the newly designed HPM II H-Point Machine, which includes
enhancements over the OSCAR H-Point machine for use in advance design applications.
