FUNCTIONAL SAFETY RECOMMENDED PRACTICE NOW PUBLISHED
SAE recommended practice J2980©, entitled "Considerations
for ISO 26262 ASIL Hazard Classification", is now published and
available at http://standards.sae.org/j2980_201505/
It is intended to provide guidance for identifying and classifying
vehicle level hazardous events. It is also aimed at facilitating the
establishment of a standard practice in the automotive industry.
Malfunctioning behaviors of given functions are explored and
determined using a hazard operational (HAZOP) analysis. These
are then mapped to vehicle level hazards, which are further
defined using the ISO 26262:2011 Hazard Analysis and Risk
Assessment (HARA) method. Guidelines for determining the
exposure, severity, and controllability of a given hazard and
ultimately the automotive safety integrity level (ASIL) of the
hazard are given.

The scope of the SAE Automotive Functional Safety
Committee, the committee responsible for the document,
comprehends safety-critical embedded control systems capable
of at least 1 ASIL A-D hazard. These control systems include, but
are not limited to steering, braking, propulsion, active safety,
and rechargeable energy storage systems installed in series
production passenger cars with a maximum gross vehicle mass
up to 3500 kg.
Subcommittees developed under the Automotive Functional
Safety Committee's scope are Brakes, Trailer Brake and Park
Brake; Steering and Suspension; and Propulsion and Driveline.
Participants in the committee include OEMs, suppliers,
processors, consulting firms, government, and other interested
parties. Questions regarding the committee and its work may be
directed to Lorie Featherstone at Lorie.Featherstone@sae.org.

The technical focus of the document is on electrical / electronic
vehicle motion control systems in the propulsion and chassis
control domains. It is limited to collision-related hazards.
