SAE CYBERSECURITY STANDARDS ACTIVITIES DISCUSSED AT NHTSA ROUNDTABLE,
GOVERNMENT/INDUSTRY MEETING
On January 19, the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) held a "Vehicle Cybersecurity
Roundtable" to facilitate the development and adoption of
vehicle cybersecurity standards and best practices.
During this roundtable discussion, Jack Pokrzywa, Director
of Global Ground Vehicle Standards, SAE International,
participated in the panel discussion "Guidance on Designing
Cyber Secure Vehicle Systems." Pokrzywa discussed SAE's
recently-published J3061, "Cybersecurity Guidebook for
Cyber-Physical Vehicle Systems" and the forthcoming
J3101, "Requirements for Hardware Protected Security for
Ground Vehicles."
The NHTSA event brought together industry experts from
vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, technology companies,
industry specialists, researchers, and government agencies,
with the goal of identifying actionable steps for the
stakeholder groups to take so that the vehicle manufacturing
industry can effectively address cybersecurity challenges.
Pokrzywa described how J3061 provides a cybersecurity
engineering process framework for vehicle cybersecurityrelevant embedded systems. He also discussed how J3101 will
develop recommended practices for automotive hardware
security mechanisms, and collect characteristics of hardware
mechanisms that could be utilized to address realistic
security needs.

The following day, NHTSA personnel participated in the
Cybersecurity session at the SAE 2016 Government/Industry
Meeting in Washington, D.C. The session featured presentations
addressing global governmental programs and industry
standards related to active safety, HMI and other vehicle systems.
Cem Hatipoglu, Division Chief, Electronic System Safety
Research at NHTSA, presented the "NHTSA Cybersecurity
Update" at the session, while Andre Weimerskirch of UMTRI
spoke on "New NHTSA Cybersecurity Research Projects:
Anomaly Detection Systems, Cybersecurity Considerations
for Heavy Vehicles, Cybersecurity of Firmware Updates."
Lisa Boran of the SAE Vehicle Electrical Systems Security
Committee gave an overview of SAE J3061.

SAE INTERNATIONAL

FOR ON- AND OFF-ROAD GLOBAL, HARMONIZED
STANDARDS SOLUTIONS, ALL ROADS LEAD TO SAE
The first engine oil viscosity standard...the first standard on automotive
cybersecurity. Since 1905, SAE International has provided the common engineering
requirements for ground vehicle products, technologies, and applications. Playing
a critical role in the progress of the industry, it is uniquely positioned to offer
innovative standards solutions to the global on- and off-road industries.
SAE is central to the development of essential standards in the areas of automotive
emissions and safety to meet the most stringent regulations around the world.
As the recognized global center of expertise on commercial vehicle construction,
agricultural, and off- road equipment/machinery, SAE standards are readily adopted
by ANSI and ISO for international implementation. Its "J" series documents are most
well-known; its most important works are its J1939 standards for controller area
networks (CAN).
An International Standards Development Organization as defined by the World
Trade Organization, SAE's consensus-based standards form the foundation of its
development capabilities, with supporting programs for harmonized solutions. Also
offered is a full suite of knowledge resources -- lifelong engineering education,
technical publishing, and events -- to ensure the pipeline of future engineering talent
and keep today's practitioners at the forefront of professional growth.
