TWO SAE VOLUNTEERS GET TOP HONORS FROM CHINA
(Originally appearing in SAE Update)
One member of SAE International, and one person involved in
SAE committee work, were among the 50 foreign experts from
21 countries recently honored with China's Friendship Award-
the nation's highest honor for achievement by a foreigner. A
ceremony for the special recognition was held Sept. 29 at the
Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Honored were Robert Galyen, CTO of Contemporary Amperex
Technologies (CATL) and Chairman of the SAE Battery
Standards Steering Committee; and Susan Ying, Chief
Integration Officer at Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China
(COMAC) and member of the SAE Aerospace Council.
Vice Premier Kai Ma presented medals to the foreign experts
at the 2015 Friendship Award ceremony and Premier Keqiang Li
and Vice Premier Gaoli Zhang met with the Friendship
Award winners.
Galyen's SAE battery committee is leading the industry in
establishing peer group battery standards for the emerging
electric and hybrid electric vehicle markets. He oversees about
two dozen SAE battery standards subcommittees and leads
in the development standards such as J1715 - Hybrid Electric
Vehicle (HEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV) Terminology; J1797 Recommended Practice for Packaging of Electric Vehicle Battery
Modules; and J1798 - Recommended Practice for Performance
Rating of Electric Vehicle Battery Modules.

As part of activities surrounding the Friendship Awards ceremony in
Beijing, Galyen and Ying visited the Lugou Bridge.

Ying retired from the Boeing Company in 2013 as Director of
Research and Technology. Before joining Boeing, she taught at
universities and directed research in U.S. Department of Energy
research labs and at NASA Ames Research Center. She chairs
the Program Committee of the International Council of the
Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS).

social progress. Every year, 50 foreign experts are selected
for the award, while 100 can qualify at certain anniversary
celebrations. A total of 1,249 foreign experts from 67 countries
and regions have received the award since 1991. It has a positive
and important influence on foreign experts working in China.
It is a great honor for experts to be invited to the awards
ceremony, which is not only a recognition of the foreign experts'
contribution to the Chinese, but also a symbol of friendship.
