WEB SEMINAR ON J3016 TO BE
OFFERED
In May, SAE will offer a web seminar
which covers the process framework
described in J3061. The course "Keys
to Creating a Cybersecurity Process
from the J3061 Process Framework" will
enable participants to relate the process
framework to their own organization's
processes, provide guidance on how
participants can tailor the J3061
process framework into an internal
cybersecurity process.
Featuring instructors from the SAE
Vehicle Electrical System Security
Committee, the course will define key
concepts in cybersecurity, and describe
key analysis activities that support a
cybersecurity process, including threat
analysis and risk assessment, and attack
tree analysis.

"This first in the world SAE Recommended Practice for automotive cyber
security was developed by an international group of top experts in the
field," said Jack Pokrzywa, Director of Ground Vehicle Standards for SAE
International. "It describes commonly structured process to ensure that
cybersecurity is built in to the design throughout all phases of product
development from concept through product design, verification/validation,
deployment, service and disposal. As a result, the likelihood of a successful
attack is reduced."
Developed through the committee's Automotive Security Guidelines and
Risk Development Task Force, J3061 provides guidance on ways to design a
complex system to perform a desired function while limiting its ability to be
exploited to do something malicious, giving organizations the guidance they
need to develop their own internal cybersecurity processes.
Companies need to take an overarching approach to cybersecurity, noted
task force member Barbara Czerny, Senior Technical Specialist, Safety
Assessor and Cybersecurity Specialist at ZF TRW. Cyber assaults can impact
safety-critical systems as well as other electronic controls.
"Hazards like unintended acceleration may involve several systems," said task
force member David Ward, Head of Functional Safety at Horiba Mira Ltd.
"Cybersecurity may be the source of that issue."
J3061 Task Force Chair Lisa Boran, Global Security Attribute Leader at
Ford Motor Company, said that computer security must also consider what
happens when vehicle ownership changes.
"Corporate plans should include an incident response plan that identifies
incidents and makes sure they're valid," she said. "Everyone should know
which team members need to be informed about the incidents."
