The Baja SAE paddock is a whir of motion and noise.
Nearly 120 college undergrad teams are parked trailerto-trailer, making it tough to figure out where one team's
"yard" ends and another's begins. But with most of the
cars struggling through dynamics, things were quiet
today. Then the peace was suddenly shattered by a mob
of college guys pushing a brand new, massive ($$$)
Miller generator/welder as if they meant to take it home
with them.
We're talking a truck mount-size generator. And just
up the lane, it looked like a Big 12 vs. Big Ten tailgate
riot going on between Nebraska and Iowa State, with an
overwhelmed Abu Dhabi Baja SAE team caught in the
middle. Utter chaos-teeth, hair and eyeballs, as the old
saying goes. But the huge grin on the face of a Nebraska
professor parent told a different story.
The 'Huskers and Cyclones had just found out the Abu
Dhabi team didn't make it through tech inspection. Their
car was held up in customs, so they hadn't time to finish
it, and tech was scheduled to close in less than three
hours. Those two groups of (mostly) farm kids dropped
what they were doing, "borrowed" the generator, dove in
with every tool and machine they had and swore they'd
get their new friends through tech by 5:00 p.m. Some
took measurements, others started cutting steel, still
more were changing electrical systems.
As if by magic, everyone knew what to do and just
did it. No meetings, no talk, just do it. Natural leaders
stepped up from out of nowhere. People didn't walk,
they ran. The Abu Dhabi crew took care of some things,
split duties with an American counterpart, and did their
best to stay clear of the big kid doing the welding. The
firewall was used to protect one squad from the sparks
and metal being ground off by someone else just inches
away. No "excuse me" or small talk. This was a crisis, and
everyone knew it.
It was obvious that these "kids" from the heartland
were loving what they were doing. This writer couldn't

stay to see if they managed to get their guests through tech and into
the race. What they DID do was say, "Welcome to the USA! What can
we do to help?"
Now you know why the 'husker prof was grinning from ear-to-ear.
As was everyone lucky enough to see this generosity and kindness for
themselves.
