OHIO STATE SETS DRONE WORLD SPEED RECORD

STUDENT AWARDS

The Ohio State University's
Aerospace Research Center
has set a world speed record
for an unmanned aerial vehicle
(UAV) of any size, pending
verification. Ohio State's jetengine UAV flew autonomously
with sustained average speeds
of 147 mph over an out-and-back
course approximately 28 miles
long, which also set a record

on Aug 30, from Kelleys Island Airport, Kelleys Island, Ohio, with the
course extending to the east over Lake Erie. The drone has a custombuilt flight controller, long-range fuel tanks, redundant radio control
links, control via satellite communications link, and ADS-B in/out
transponder technology for avoiding collisions with other aircraft.
The official record is pending review and certification by the National
Aeronautic Association (NAA) and by the Fédération Aéronautique
Internationale (FAI).

SAE International has a number of awards for college
students and student teams. Deadlines are coming up
for the following:
Honeywell Outstanding Collegiate Branch: Deadline
Dec. 1
This award recognizes SAE Collegiate Branches for
exemplary performance in the areas of technical
meetings, networking opportunities, SAE Collegiate
Design Series teams, membership and recruitment, and
community service programs such as SAE International's
A World In Motion curriculum. Awards are given to
winning teams in each of three classes: $1,000 for Class
1 (75+ students in chapter); $850 for Class 2 (50-74
students); and $600 for Class 3 (25-49 students). Visit

A SHOOTOUT, CANADIAN STYLE
Formule ETS of Montreal's École
de technologie supérieure came
out on top at the UofT Shootout,
a small annual autocross
competition hosted since 2001
by the University of Toronto for
21 Formula SAE teams. Finishing
second was State Racing, the
team from Michigan State

Carleton University placed third.
The winner is the team with the lowest average time for two of their
drivers' fastest laps. The event (not sanctioned by SAE International) is
held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington, Ontario.

WISE UP!
SAE International and several other similar societies are offering
a summer internship in Washington, DC, for engineering students
interested in government policy. The Washington Internship for Students
of Engineering (WISE) program was instituted in 1980 and gives selected
students (one per engineering society) an opportunity to discover
how government officials make decisions on complex technological
issues while learning how engineers and scientists can contribute to the
legislative process and regulatory decision-making. Brenden Foster of
Pellissippi State Community College (Knoxville, Tenn.) was SAE's WISE
intern for 2017. The application deadline for the 2018 SAE WISE internship
is Dec. 1. Interested students should email SAE's Logen Johnson at

MOMENTUM

The Milwaukee School of Engineering is the most recent winner
of the Honeywell Outstanding Collegiate Branch Award. Shown is
the school's team that competed at the Shell Eco Marathon and
SAE Supermileage competitions in 2017.
William R "Bill" Adam Formula SAE Vehicle
Development Grant: Deadline Jan. 15
This grant provides funding to a Formula SAE team
to assist with the development of their project. The
selected applicant will receive a $500 grant which must
be used toward the development of the vehicle. Visit

Henry O. Fuchs Student Award: Deadline Feb. 1
This award recognizes a graduate or recently graduated
student who is working in the field of fatigue research
and applications. The award consists of a framed
certificate, a $100 honorarium, and a transportation
allowance to attend the SAE Fatigue Design & Evaluation
Committee meeting where the award is presented. Visit
