Mike took the Aztec Baja team under his wing in
preparation for the 2016 season and allocated a corner
of the machine shop to the team. Another large step
was the development of the team's first-ever studentengineered two-stage reduction gearbox led by the
senior design team of Dylan Delonzor and Jessica Brown.
The gearbox worked flawlessly and proved itself with the
team placing second in the acceleration event at Baja
SAE California.
In the endurance event, the vehicle ran in the top 5
for the first 2.5 hours, but the #39 SDSU car had a CVT
failure that resulted in the team placing 15th.
Despite the setback, the team showed that it was one
other teams should worry about. The team knew it had
what it took to run up front.
The 2017 season will forever be the season that
established SDSU - Aztec Baja as one of the most
competitive schools on the West Coast. For the first
time, SDSU was competing in all three of the annual
Baja SAE competitions.
For the first 2017 competition, in Gorman, Calif., the
car was newly engineered and well prepared with big
improvements in aerodynamics, driver ergonomics,
suspension and drivetrain, as well as weighing in at a
comfortable 365 lb. After placing fifth in the Hill Climb,
ninth in Maneuverability, and backing up the 2016
Acceleration second place with another second, the
competition in Gorman was shaping up to be the team's
best shot at a top 10 Overall.

MOMENTUM

The #75 car of SDSU got the holeshot and battled back and forth in
the top three until a fuel pit and driver change from Mario Gutierrez
to sophomore Matt Lane at the 1-hour mark. Matt made it about a half
lap around the track before the car lost power. The drain plugs backed
out of the engine block, draining all of the oil out and seizing the crank.
Once the car made it to the paddock on a tow strap, the team did a
complete engine swap with a spare engine in under 45 minutes and had
Matt back out on the track to battle back from 31st to a 12th place finish
in Endurance, putting the team at 15th overall for the weekend.
The second competition of the season, in Pittsburg, Kan., was
challenging because of heavy rainfall and tornado warning, which cut
everyone's dynamic day in half. Although that was an unfortunate
situation for most teams, the #130 car of SDSU was in a great situation
to place in the top 10 overall because they got to get a run at all the
dynamic events before the weather moved in.
The Endurance course was incredibly muddy, and Mario was trying
to conserve the tear-off lenses on his goggles. After about 40 minutes
on the course and running in second, he accidently pulled off the
remainder of his tear-offs and hit the pits to get new goggles. The team
lost a handful of spots.
Matt Lane was to drive the second hour. But he completed only
one lap before the car lost power. The team diagnosed and fixed the
problem: mud in the fuel lines, clogging the carburetor. The team
cleared out the carb and sent Matt out, knowing that just staying on
the course with no issues would result in a top 10 Endurance finish and
potentially a top 10 overall.
Later, with 1 hour and 40 minutes left in the race, SDSU crew chief
Branden Elam made the call not to tell Mario where he was running on
the track via radio intercoms, instead calling out car numbers that were
