to participate in co-op education, a form of reoccurring
internship, throughout their five-year undergraduate
tenure. Each student must participate in at least three
co-op semesters to graduate; however, many students
complete five co-op terms prior to graduating.
Many universities have adopted co-ops, but under
the guidance of Herman Schneider, the University of
Cincinnati was the first to employ such a program. It is
so closely linked to the school that co-op was originally
called the "Cincinnati-plan."
While on co-op, these students do much more than
fetch coffee or sit in meetings taking notes on the side.
Cincinnati co-ops are on the floor, making changes to
aircraft designs, overseeing test procedures spiraling
into the million-dollar range, and performing research
with the industry's best and brightest. For aerospace
engineering students, these co-ops include working
alongside full-time engineers at prestigious companies
such as GE Aviation, Gulfstream Aerospace, SpaceX,
TECT Power, Belcan, Kinetic Vision, NASA, and many
more. It's this mixture of classroom knowledge and realworld experience that helps Cincinnati students get a
well-rounded engineering education.

Another demonstration of the team success is constantly overcoming
challenges, perhaps the toughest of which is that no single member
ever competes more than once. A continuously rotating class of
seniors comprises the team every year, leaving the club void of any real
previous experience. While to some this strategy might seem poorly
planned, these students don't see it that way. Instead, a fresh set of
eyes gets the chance to test themselves and their ability to outperform
earlier classes. Challenges that seemed to elude students in prior years
may be easily reconcilable to a new group of students. Concepts are
tirelessly tested and improved, always having a healthy amount of
skepticism for former work and consistently questioning the methods
of how the design came into place. This approach of a renewed and
enthusiastic vision has proven itself in recent years.
At this point, one begins to understand how Cincinnati has
slowly but surely built a successful program. Nevertheless, having
the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm that comes with each
passing year is simply not enough to guarantee a first-place finish, let
alone land somewhere on the podium. The final and most important
ingredient in the mix is ambition.

COMPETITION
Practical engineering training and a first-class education
are two tremendously powerful tools when given a
challenge, such as the SAE Aero Design Competition.
One of the many testaments to this would be reflected
in Cincinnati's track record at recent competitions. Since
2009, the University of Cincinnati has entered 16 teams
in the competitions (8 Regular Class, 5 Micro Class, and 3
Advanced Class). During this timeframe, these 16 student
teams have accumulated 10 first-place finishes, 7 secondplace finishes, and 4 third-place finishes in some of the
various static and dynamic events that make up the overall
competition. Success like this doesn't come by mistake
or happenstance. UC's success comes through a strong
legacy, through engineering students having industry
experience, and through teamwork.

MOMENTUM

Visible in the fuselage are tennis balls, which represented "passengers" in the 2017
SAE Aero Design competition rules. The more passengers, the better. Bearcat Airlines
transported 57 of them and won first place in the "Most Payload Transported" event
en route to placing first Overall in the Regular Class.
