Cornell Racing finished 8th overall at Formula SAE
Michigan 2017, showing progress over prior years
(23rd in 2016 and 50th in 2015).
A RETURN TO GLORY DAYS?
Once dominant, Cornell University's Formula SAE team views its strong
2017 performance as a hopeful sign that it's back on a championship path.
CORNELL RACING from Cornell University is one of the
longest standing Formula SAE teams in the world, with
over three decades of experience and success under
its belt. Starting as a handful of engineering students
in 1987, the team has now grown to 55 undergraduate
members from various fields of study including
engineering, business, and arts.
Hopefuls around the world apply to Cornell
Engineering for its diverse set of over 20 project teams
that truly follow the university's motto of "...any person,
any study." Cornell Racing attracts the best and brightest
of these select few who have a passion for racing and a
desire to "Go Faster!" as the team says.
In Formula SAE history, more than 30 years now, Cornell Racing is the
winningest team, with nine first-place titles to its name at the Formula
SAE Michigan competition. Frequently, you will hear the announcements
over the sounds of roaring engines at Michigan International Speedway
speaking of Cornell University as a "powerhouse" and a "juggernaut" in
In recent history, however, Cornell has been absent from the podium,
with its last win in 2005. The fierce competition in the largest North
American competition has been evolving at a rampant pace in the last
decade. It seems as though Cornell is having a tough time keeping up,
giving way to other emerging powerhouses of automotive design.
Or are they?

Cornell is famous for its powerful 4-cylinder turbocharged engine
package that has been the workhorse for the ARG series cars for years.
(ARG stands for Albert R. George, the team's founding advisor over 30
years ago who led the team to nine world championships.) ARG17, the
2017 iteration, was no exception. Centered around a Honda CBR600RR,
a BorgWarner KP35 turbocharger is overtly located outside of the main
frame of the vehicle to enhance lubrication drainage. Coupled with
a dry-sump oil system, modified fuel injection, and custom exhaust/
intake, ARG17 was one of the most powerful FSAE cars on the track,
making close to 100 hp.
"It really isn't all about the power," Dynamometer Lead Nico Demet
