CAREER PATH

DOSSIER: LAUREN GOULET OF
JOHN DEERE
THIS MONTH'S DOSSIER SUBJECT, Lauren Goulet,
graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE)
in May 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering. She
now works for John Deere in the Worldwide Construction
and Forestry (C&F) Division. Her career with John Deere
started in the summer of 2016 as an intern in powertrain
design. In June 2017, Lauren joined the engineering
development program as a full-time employee. The
development program offers young engineers the
opportunity to experience several roles through rotations
before settling into a permanent position.
Lauren's first rotation was in Product Verification
and Validation as a test engineer for engines, cooling,
and HVAC systems for C&F new product programs. Her
responsibilities included:
* Developing the test plan
* Working with shop personnel to prepare the lab space/
machines
* Executing the test
* Interpreting and then communicating results with
design engineering
* Writing the test reports

With her teammates from the 2016-2017 Baja SAE team from Milwaukee School of
Engineering.
Her most significant job assignment was completing cooler
component level testing. Lauren is now in her second rotation as a
design engineer working on exhaust aftertreatment systems for diesel
engines.
"What I like most about my experiences so far is working through
the unique challenges of each project, especially in PV&V," she said.
"The day-to-day work is filled with variety and new issues to resolve. I
enjoy working with cross-functional teams and critically thinking to find
solutions."
Why did you decide to become an engineer?
I owe my drive and passion for the engineering field to the sport of
NASCAR. From the beginning, I found the complexity and science
behind racecars to be an intriguing aspect of the sport. My passion
for the sport soon began to extend into my education. I took every
opportunity that I had to relate racing and NASCAR into my school
essays, projects, and presentations. In my junior year of high school,
I took my first engineering class. My decision to pursue mechanical
engineering as a career came with the completion of a project in which I
reverse-engineered a Hot Wheels racecar.

Lauran Goulet holds the trophy for first place in the Design Report
event at the 2016 SAE Supermileage competition in Marshall, Mich.

To what character traits do you attribute your success to date?
I attribute my past and future successes to some of the character traits
I have picked up from my family and peers. My dedication and need for
learning by "getting my hands dirty" comes from my grandfather, who
spent many years of his life farming. Spending late nights in the Baja
SAE shop and countless hours preparing the SAE Supermileage vehicle
at competition helped me gain technical experience to secure a job as a
mechanical engineer upon graduation. I owe my inquisitive nature and
passion for education to my father, who put himself through college and
