earned a doctorate. My willingness to learn throughout
every job rotation and training opportunity has, and
will continue, to provide me with the knowledge and
capability to have a successful career as an engineer.
Of what accomplishment are you most proud?
Designing and fabricating our Baja SAE chassis is the
accomplishment that I am most proud of. At the end of
my junior year of college, myself and a few team members
Getting personal with Lauren Goulet
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I take every opportunity that I
can to be outdoors! I love being out on my family's
boat and catching fish on the river. When I'm not
open-water fishing, I enjoy being out on a lake ice
fishing. Recently, I have taken up hunting and have
been very successful during my first deer and turkey
hunts. I also enjoy archery and hope that I can be
ready for next year's bow hunting season.
from the SAE Supermileage team decided that we were
going to restart the Baja SAE team at MSOE. The Baja
team saw limited success at competition in previous years,
mainly due to a heavy chassis and drivetrain. After months
of design and finite-element analysis, our fabricated
chassis saw a 30% reduction in weight and has put the
MSOE Baja team back in the competition. Knowing that I
was able to provide value to our school and team project
was a rewarding experience I will never forget.
What is the most interesting project that you are
working on at the moment?
The most interesting project I am working on in my
second rotation is developing a diesel emissions
system for an emerging market. This includes exhaust
aftertreatment component layout, supporting structure,
harness routing and exhaust plumbing. I have had several
opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional global
teams and work through business processes.
Lauren drove the MSOE gasoline powered Supermileage vehicle in five competitions.
Who most influenced you on your journey to becoming a professional
The person who most influenced me to become a professional engineer
is my father. Seeing his educational background and hard work pay off
in his career made me work extra hard in school to achieve my goal of
becoming a mechanical engineer. Throughout high school and college
he pushed me to achieve good grades and participate in extracurricular
projects and trainings that would benefit my future engineering career.
In what ways were you involved with SAE International as a student,
and how did that involvement prepare you for the workforce?
I was involved with SAE International in several different ways during my
four years of college. I served as President of the MSOE Student Chapter
of SAE for two years and had previously held the role of Secretary. I
attended the SAE Milwaukee Section board meetings and professional
events as a student member. For three years, I was a dedicated member
of the MSOE SAE Supermileage vehicle team, for which I served as ViceProject Manager, co-led the design/fabrication of the chassis, and drove
the vehicle in five competitions. Arguably one of the most instrumental
roles I played on the team was that of "team mom." Keeping a group
of college guys on task and making sure they showed up to a final
presentation without ketchup on their tie surprisingly proved to be
a challenge! During my senior year, I helped restart the MSOE SAE
Baja team and led the design and fabrication of a new chassis. My
involvement with SAE International provided me with teamwork and
communication skills that have helped prepare me for the workforce.
Why did you decide to transfer your SAE Student Membership to
Professional Membership after you graduated?
John Deere encourages its engineers to be actively engaged in our
local community, as well as the industrial community, so continuing my
membership was an easy decision for me. I transferred my SAE Student
Membership to Professional Membership after I graduated because
of the networking opportunities that SAE provided me as a student.
As a young professional, I would like to continue to develop these
connections and learn from fellow engineers. I would also like to provide
the same guidance I received as a student to current SAE student
members as they are preparing for the workforce.
