schedule or timeline for the team, if there is not one
already, is a useful way to display the team's progress
in a way that is easily accessible. Keep these milestones
organized and specific, and encourage the rest of the
team to follow suit with their own deliverables. When
looking at your team, evaluate what resources are
available to you. Find out what professors, graduate
students, or local resources are accessible and
determine how your team can tap into their expertise.

BE ADAPTABLE
This just seems obvious until an obstacle jeopardizes
your team's progress. When working on a larger team,
there will be times when personalities clash. Keeping a
calm disposition and staying level-headed in the face
of adversity is much easier said than done. When an
obstacle arises, roll with the punches.
Just weeks from competition, our electric vehicle
would not charge. The car had to be sent to Detroit
to be fixed, and arrived back at our garage only nine
days before the year-1 season-ending competition.
Re-outfitting the car with equipment and running all
possible tests within nine days was a challenge, but being
prepared for the car's return and having an accelerated
schedule created beforehand let everyone on the team
know their role and new deadlines so the car could be
improved as much as possible before being shipped to
the competition site in Yuma, Ariz.
When obstacles do show up, look for opportunities
to connect your team with help. Some people just need
you to ask them how you can help and then you may be
able to connect them with someone who has the proper
knowledge for the job.

KNOW WHERE TO FIND HELP
I mentioned this earlier, but I thought it was so important
for me I wanted to reiterate it. Understand the resources
at your disposition and for the use by the team. Many
professors want to be involved in student organizations,
but may not know how. Look for opportunities for your
team to gain knowledge from the community or other
graduate students. You may want to look into resources
for management help, instead of being solely technically
focused. Having an experienced project manager mentor
our team was a great help to me throughout the year.
Additionally, numerous books have been written on the
subject, and every author brings their own ideas and
inputs into the topic of leadership.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
When I took on my role, I did not consider myself a
leader. But looking back on the work I did and the people
I worked with, I realized I was a role model.
If you are a leader, or just act as a leader in your
organization, you will be a role model to at least one

person on your team. Sometimes it is easy to forget this fact and play it
off, but it is always a central part of your position.
One way you can do this is by being very organized. When I had the
project manager position, I was still a full-time engineering student
and my calendar became my life that entire year. Being organized and
planning ahead will project confidence in your team in that you are in
control of the situations ahead of you and you will be able to support
them in their roles.
In my opinion, acting as a servant leader and supporting your team
members in any way you can is the biggest impact you can make to
the team. You help your team members better complete their tasks
so that overall progress can be made. Sometimes this support will be
through motivation tactics, and other times you will be giving advice
to new members. You will have the opportunity to cultivate stronger
relationships within your team, which yield better working conditions
and a higher motivation to work.
