People are more likely to complete tasks when they
get to work with their friends along the way. I liked
to do this by being inviting to new team members at
our general assembly meetings. I would try to talk to
some of them individually, learn about their interests,
and connect them with an experienced team member
with the same interests. It seemed small, but when an
underclassman joins a large design team full of people who already
know each other, it is an intimidating experience.
Emma Tum Suden, project manager for the Virginia Tech AutoDrive
Challenge team, wrote this article for MOMENTUM. She recently graduated
with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and has started
working for General Motors in Detroit.
