GO ALL IN WITH YOUR SAE STUDENT MEMBERSHIP
A free subscription to MOMENTUM is not the
only benefit of being a Student Member of SAE
International. It certainly has a role to play in
keeping students aware of what other students
are up to in terms of engineering projects they
are working on, and in drawing attention to the
other perks of SAE Student Membership.
But there are many other ways in which you
can more than recover the cost of your $30 SAE
dues and heighten your hiring prospects.
One of those ways comes in the form of a
brand new SAE technical paper contest. It's not Patrick Ponticel,
MOMENTUM Editor
hard to figure out why employers would see
in very positive lights any recent engineering
graduate who'd demonstrated the initiative to
write a technical paper and present it at an all-expenses-paid trip
to SAE's Innovations in Mobility conference. Submission deadline is
March 25. More contest details are on page 20. Beyond the contest,
students are encouraged to submit technical papers to any SAE
conference that includes papers.
An SAE conference is something every student should experience,
whether presenting a paper or not. So many layers of opportunity. The
learning that takes place in the sessions is, of course, of great value. But
often, networking with professional engineers proves more valuable.
It's perhaps a secret to student engineers that most veteran engineers
consider it their honor-if not their duty-to provide encouragement to
you. In some cases, they can be of direct help to you in landing a job.
SAE has decided to offer students free registration to this year's WCX
World Congress Experience (sae.org/attend/wcx). The event will take
place April 9-11 in Detroit.
You need not attend a conference for great career advice. SAE's
Mentor Program (connection.sae.org/mentoring) can line you up with an
industry professional who has purposefully agreed to be a mentor. It's a
free service too valuable to pass up.
SAE's online community, Member Connection (connection.sae.org/
home), features an open forum in which student and professional
members can elicit answers and feedback on any topic relevant to
mobility engineering-career advice included.
Most student members probably know that SAE has dedicated
Facebook pages for its various Collegiate Design Series competitions.
But it's also worth checking out SAE's general Facebook page
(facebook.com/SAEInternational) and other social media channels
(Twitter, etc.).
MOMENTUM hopes you continue your engagement with SAE after
college. The first year of SAE professional membership is free for
students who sign up within a year of graduation. For more information,
visit sae.org/participate/membership/join/student.

SAE International Sections

SAE International sections are local units comprised of 100 or more SAE International members
in a defined technical or geographic area. The purpose of local sections is to meet the technical,
developmental, and personal needs of the SAE members in a given area. For more information,
please visit sae.org/sections.

SAE International Collegiate Chapters

Collegiate Chapters are a way for SAE International student members to get together on their
campus and develop skills in a student-run and -elected environment. Student Members are vital
to the continued success and future of SAE. While your course work teaches you the engineering
knowledge you need, participation in your SAE collegiate chapter can develop or enhance other
important skills, including leadership, time management, project management, communications,
organization, planning, delegation, budgeting, and finance. For more information, or for how to
find your local chapter, please visit students.sae.org/chapters/collegiate/.
