THE ELEMENTS
Cold Canadian winds can't stop University of Manitoba
team from reaching SAE Aero Design heights.

The University of Manitoba's Regular Class remote-controlled aircraft takes off during one of the seven flight rounds at SAE Aero Design East 2018 in
Lakeland, Fla.

HOME OF THE APTLY NAMED Jets and the Blue Bombers professional
sports teams, the city of Winnipeg in Canada is no stranger to aviation
and aerospace. Although many would refer to Winnipeg as a bigsmall town, Winnipeg has always been at the forefront of aerospace
development and is a source of inspiration for many residents of its city.
Drawing on this inspiration, a small group of engineering students
from the University of Manitoba entered the SAE Aero Design
competition in the early 1990s, thus joining the existing Formula SAE
and Baja SAE teams under University of Manitoba SAE (UMSAE) banner.
Twenty-eight years later, in 2018, UMSAE Polar Air Aero Design team
would see its 1st overall finish in Regular Class.
There were many aspects of the team that led UMSAE Polar Air to
success in the 2018 Aero Design East Competition, held in Lakeland,
Fla. Overall, the greatest impact was made by the testing that was
performed on the aircraft, including both flight testing and individual
component testing. Throughout the years, the team discovered that
without sufficient testing, even a competitive design can prove to be
ineffective. The team in recent years had been plagued with numerous
minor failures during competition flight rounds, which resulted in many
round disqualifications even with one of the highest payload carrying
capacities in Regular Class. Some of these failures included separation of
polymer treads from wheels upon landing; excessive payload vibrations
caused by resonance frequencies from an imbalanced propeller,
resulting in grounding of the aircraft; and random ejection of the arming
plug during takeoff.

One of the greatest challenges the team faced
regarding flight testing was not lack of planning,
but the harsh Winnipeg winters. Heavy snowfall is
common during the winter months, and usually occurs
between the time the rules are released, and a fully
functioning aircraft is built around the end of November.
Temperatures plunge as low as -30° C, and the added
wind chill makes the situation worse. This has previously
prohibited the team from testing on a cleared runway,
which has caused aircraft deficiencies to slip through
to the final competition aircraft, as mentioned before.
Keeping this in mind, the team identified multiple testing
locations early in the season to ensure ample flight
testing opportunities.
With the flight field issue resolved, the team
proceeded to develop a systematic approach to design
a competitive aircraft. Once an aircraft was sized based
on the competition constraints, the team proceeded to
construct and flight test a 50% scale prototype, which
was then followed by the construction and flight testing
of a full-scale prototype. This full-scale prototype was
then further optimized and led to the competitionwinning aircraft.
The 50% scale prototype was created to verify flight
parameters and the team's sizing methodology. This
