Frigid temperature was a major challenge for the University of Manitoba's Aero Design team in flight-testing their designs.
was a rapid prototyping endeavor that allowed the team to test multiple
aircraft configurations within a short time frame. From a personnel
perspective, this was a good bonding exercise for new members of the
team to work together and increase team chemistry early in the season,
which also contributed to the success of the team.
In addition to being tested for general stability in the air, the 50% scale
prototype was also used for a deeper analysis into the static margin
of the aircraft. A thorough static margin analysis was performed while
sizing the aircraft, and the team planned to test fly the 50% aircraft with
both a small and large horizontal stabilizer to verify this analysis. The
aircraft was successfully flown twice, once with each size of horizontal
stabilizer. The smaller horizontal stabilizer exhibited stable flight
characteristics and was therefore chosen to implement in the full-scale
prototype. Hence, aircraft performance was maintained while aircraft
weight was minimized.
With the success of the 50% scale prototype, work began on the fullscale prototype to verify the structural stability of the aircraft as well as
to verify the maximum weight carried by the aircraft. The weather had
cooperated, and the low snowfall did not restrict the team from utilizing
the same flight field as used in the previous 50% scale aircraft flight test.
Although each part of the aircraft was tested and built based on the
expected loads, the aircraft never made it off the ground. Ice patches
on the runway created violent vibrations in the nose of the aircraft upon
ground roll. This vibration combined with the frigid temperatures caused
the adhesive between the motor bulkhead and the nose of the aircraft

to fail. This resulted in a catastrophic failure as the motor
detached and sheared through the nose of the aircraft,
bringing the aircraft to a halt.
Although this flight testing was a failure in terms of
the aircraft never being airborne, it was still considered a
success as a major aircraft deficiency was recognized. It
was noted at this point that the weather in Florida would
be milder and the runway would be clear of debris,
which would severely limit the chances of this failure
occurring at competition. However, the team took no
chances and decided to reinforce the nose of the aircraft
to reduce the vibrations.
Back in the shop, this deficiency was quickly
addressed, and the prototype aircraft was ready to
be flight tested again. However, a major snowfall had
completely covered the existing flight field and was
not allowed to be cleared due to regulations. The team
headed to the next closest cleared runway, which was
one hour south of Winnipeg in the town of Altona. The
size of the aircraft alone had made it difficult to transport,
but the weather made the conditions all the worse. High
gusting winds and temperatures of -30°C made flight
testing questionable. However, the team pushed on
because this was the last opportunity to flight-test the
prototype before construction of the competition aircraft.
