Team members pose with their large Regular Class and smaller Micro Class aircraft upon completion of the Aero Design East 2018. In the Regular Class, the
team won first place overall as well as first place in the main scoring category, Highest Payload Lifted. It placed 10th overall in the Micro Class.

The 50% scale model.
The team waited anxiously as the plane was carried onto the flight
field. This was followed by a nervous ground roll. Eventually, the aircraft
found itself airborne. This successful flight was repeated four times, each
with an increased weight added until the aircraft was equipped with
105% design load thanks to the low-density altitude. Although in the last
flight the aircraft slowly lumbered through the air and landed in a snow
bank off the runway, the team considered the day an overall success,
as the aircraft's weight capacity was verified and the density altitude
information was collected for the payload prediction curve.
With the success of the full-scale aircraft, the team headed into the
development of the competition aircraft. During full-scale prototype

testing, the aircraft struggled to become airborne within
the 200-ft takeoff limit. Thus, the aircraft configuration
needed optimization, and the team determined that
optimization of the wing would result in the greatest
performance increase.
The wing incidence angle was slightly increased to the
angle of attack that possessed the highest lift-to-drag
ratio. Hence, runway lift was maximized while runway
drag was simultaneously minimized resulting in a quicker
takeoff. Furthermore, wingtips and vortex generators
were implemented to increase general lift capabilities of
the aircraft.
Due to the limited information available on these two
devices being used on small remote-controlled aircraft,
the team had to develop its own testing methodology.
Starting with flow simulations, the team iteratively
developed a wingtip that minimized induced drag while
keeping manufacturability under consideration. The best
configuration was then tested in a wind tunnel using
a modified end of the full-scale prototype wing. For
wingtip testing, a load scale was used to determine lift
and drag at all applicable angles of attack at cruise and
takeoff wind speeds. Specifically, the wing section was
attached to a modified motor thrust stand, and the lift
and drag created by the wing was directly measured as a
force on the scale.
Furthermore, small sections of string were utilized
to determine the effects of the vortex generators in
delaying boundary layer separation and increasing stall
