and the resin only took 30 minutes to cure. If there were any problems
in getting the resin to flow through all parts of the material, the body
would be a limp, useless mess, and we didn't have the resources to make
another. Thankfully, both halves of the shell were a success, with only a
few areas that needed additional resin to harden up the material.
Once the frame was welded, we brought it back to the shop and
worked to mount everything to it and figure out if there were going to
be any major issues. Only a few minor issues arose-the engine wasn't
aligned and our front wheelbase was slightly too wide. After quickly
resolving these problems, we moved on to mounting the new carbonfiber shell to our frame.
In the past, the mounts used to attach to the shell were welded onto
the frame, but this wasn't used in the new design for several reasons.
Welded mounts can't be adjusted, and if they break, the frame is
damaged, which would be difficult to fix. Instead, we created clamps
that bolt around the circular frame members and are easily moved and
replaced. While they are heavier than welded mounts, the reliability
gained is much more beneficial to our long-term success. Additionally,
due to the changes in the frame and other components on the vehicle,
the overall vehicle weight was reduced by roughly 1 lb, and so any
weight gain was negligible.
Fast-forward to 10 days before competition. The vehicle is all buttoned
up and running like a dream. Our driver, Lauren Bangert, is making the
laps look easy as she practices economy runs in the biggest parking
lot on campus when suddenly everything came to a screeching halt-
literally. The weld that supported the left wheel mounting plate had
broken, the wheel bent outwards, and the body dug into the pavement.
We determined that an oversized washer caused a crack to form on
the weld, and the bumps in the parking lot caused it to propagate and
eventually fail. Having this happen so close to competition was both a gift
and a curse. We were in a frenzy to get it repaired in time, but at least it
happened then instead of the next week when it really counted.
Our performance at the 2018 competition proved to be our best yet, in
numerous ways. After being the first team through the rigorous technical
inspection, we spent the rest of the day practicing on the large oval track
