EDITORIAL
MAKING THE CONNECTION
Last month in this space, I wrote about the
many benefits that come with SAE International
Student Membership.
This month, I'd like to focus on one of those
benefits: Member Connection (connection.sae.
org), which serves primarily as an online written
discussion forum for both SAE Professional and
Student Members but has additional utility.
Any topic of relevance to mobility
engineering is fair game for discussion, be
it technical or nontechnical. Often, an SAE

on one matter or another, just to get some
feedback. Other times, a Member will ask
a practical question, knowing the Member
Connection community will be there to provide insights and opinions, if
not necessarily concrete answers.
Member Connection is a free resource that students could, and
should, take advantage of. Always eager to help young engineers on
their way up, the veteran engineers whose knowledge and wisdom
often finds voice on the site will undoubtedly offer their opinions and
relate their experiences to whatever question a student might have
about, for instance, a particular technical challenge he or she is facing
with their Formula SAE car, SAE Aero Design plane, or Baja SAE offroad vehicle. It's just too rich a resource to ignore, and surely a sign of a
good young engineer is exercising the wisdom to tap into the expertise
of more experienced engineers.
Speaking of expertise. An occasional feature in the Open Forum (one
of the main discussion communities in Member Connection) is "Chat
with the Experts." These are two-day discussions led by an SAE staff
person who has expertise in a particular area of mobility. The topics,
which are predetermined, represent one of SAE's eight technology focus
areas. The expert, whose responsibilities to SAE on an everyday basis lie
outside of Member Connection, dedicates himself or herself to answering
questions posed on that month's technology topic in the discussion.
Since launching in early 2018, the Chats have proven very popular. To
review the discussion threads of those posted to date, visit
connection.sae.org/participate/sme-technical-discussions. The dates
and topic of the next Chat will be announced soon, so be sure to visit
Member Connection frequently for the details.
Contests represent another occasional feature of Open Forum. In
February, the SAE Membership staff, which runs Member Connection,
conducted an Engineers Week contest in which those offering what
were judged by staff to be the best answer to each of the single daily
questions won a $100 Amazon gift card. Keep an eye out for future
contest opportunities.
