Michigan Tech hopes structured design
process yields improvement in Year 2 of
the AutoDrive Challenge competition.
CHALLENGING STUDENTS TO SOLVE problems related to autonomous
driving and preparing them to move into the industry with autonomous
vehicle experience under their belt are the goals of AutoDrive
Challenge, one of SAE International's Collegiate Design Series
competitions. Furthermore, it teaches students how to take what they
learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world problems. Often, it's
the first time they are working with 50+ people on one project. This
teaches students about cross-team communication and how to make
sure everyone is working together to stay on track to meet deadlines.
This isn't as easy as it sounds, and often teams need to reflect and see
what works and doesn't work so that, moving forward, they can change
accordingly to ensure that the project is successful.
Last year, Year 1, was focused on concept selection for the eight
university teams in the competition. Each team became familiar with

the sensing and computation software and was tasked
with completion of a concept design written paper as
well as simple missions for on-site evaluation, located in
Yuma, AZ.
Michigan Technological University started off Year 1 by
splitting our team into sub-teams. The sub-teams were
Build, Vehicle Dynamics, Sensor Fusion, and Mission
Planning. These sub-teams were comprised of our
undergraduate students. Our graduate students worked
separately on other tasks for the competition.
I was the Project Lead for the Build sub-team. Our task
was to mount onto the vehicle all of the components
that would make it autonomous. Going into the spring
semester, my team headed the Concept Design Report
and Concept Design Presentation events/challenges,
which are 2 of 10 for which teams earn a possible
maximum of 1,000 total points in the AutoDrive
Challenge competition. We started it then because most
of the components were mounted on the vehicle by the
end of the fall semester or early in the spring semester,
so we had most of the spring semester available to work
on other tasks. Taking this on at first was daunting, but
we soon embraced it and got to work.
