At Formula SAE Lincoln 2018, UMN Gopher Motorsports placed third
in the Endurance Event and fourth place overall.
our reliability record, we decided to play it safe by
measuring stretch at 2% so that any stretch at or past
2% is determined an "overstretch" and the chain should
be replaced. A Go-No Go gauge was manufactured to
measure across six links in the chain. It had a slot at the
2% stretch point and if the chain was able to be placed in
the slot, it was a "No Go" and must be replaced.
Sprocket misalignment was found to be the most
significant contribution to the chain failure. The parallel
misalignment was greater than the entire width of the
front sprocket, resulting in a bent chain and compressed
pins. With the master link as the strongest point in the
chain, it could not handle the force on the end. After
re-aligning the sprockets and doing some research and
calculations, it was decided that we would also switch to
a riveted master link.
Electrical also had an opportunity to re-evaluate
several components to ensure peak reliability for that
second competition. After driving in the rain, it was
evident that the electrical harness would not hold
up against water. Each component to be inspected
and sealed off was added to the pre-driving vehicle
inspection, what our team refers to as "teching." The
Power Distribution Module had several failed connections,
so we determined a more thorough inspection in our
teching procedure to be completed each time we
prepared to drive the car.
As that month droned on, we went through each part
on the car, updating our Fatigue Log, writing Vehicle
Incident Reports for documentation and prevention,
reviewing procedures with team members, practicing
proper teching techniques, and developing the team in
resilience. Team members took initiative to renovate the
Vehicle Incident Report Log to create a more connected
and relatable network of issues and establish prevention
plans. Some members updated the pre-driving inspection
teching checklists to increase legibility, understanding,
and accountability in order to provide the members
completing them with the information necessary.

redeem team and we headed to Lincoln to compete once again.
The anticipation was worth it. This was the first time University of
Minnesota's Formula SAE team had attended FSAE Lincoln, and we
were ready. Five exciting and nerve-racking days later, we took home
the 4th place trophy. Perhaps most exciting, we took 3rd in Endurance,
proving that we can be, and are, resilient.
Gopher Motorsports plans to attend 2019 FSAE Michigan in May and
is currently on the waitlist for 2019 FSAE Lincoln. With 27 new members,
we have designed the car with a focus in vehicle dynamics-complete
with an entire frame redesign and a new aerodynamics package for
a lower center of gravity. Since the team's founding in 1978, Gopher
Motorsports has gone from placing among the last 25 teams to placing
with the top teams, and we hope that 2019 is no exception.
