pressure implies that the underbody flow is faster, which suggests that
there exists a delay or suppression of underbody flow separation.
Overall, while both turbulence specifications do appear to affect
the predictions, ultimately, the predictions appear to show a higher
degree of sensitivity to the choice of freestream turbulence length
scale, compared to the choice of turbulence intensity. In addition, this
study reveals that the effects resulting from the choice of these two
parameters are confined to their smaller values, as the NASCAR Gen6 racecar aerodynamic characteristics tend to be independent of the
freestream specifications at larger values of these two variables.
Although one could expect very large values of either of these two
parameters on a racetrack, unfortunately, these large values are too
high and unrealistic in a wind-tunnel environment. While this study does
show that the turbulence specifications do have a significant effect on
the car, it must be now be determined how these findings can be used
in order to better predict the aerodynamic characteristics under the
conditions that the car will see on the racetrack.

Automated systems development and testing continues at a very rapid pace. Media
reports often overlook the need for maintaining and ensuring the reliability of these next
generation transportation systems. Several industry studies report passenger vehicle usage
is at 5% while future automated fleets project a usage as high as 95% requiring improved
system reliability. This SAE expert panel will address key technologies being developed to
ensure highly reliable automated systems and system performance. In addition, attendees
will learn about several ongoing industry initiatives to solve these challenges.
