of their comfort zones to grow personally and
professionally. I have had the privilege of working with
Dr. Mark Atwater on his metal foam research and, at
first, I had no idea what I was doing. As I have continued
to work for him, I have had so many opportunities and
learned more than I ever could in a class. The work for
him consists of many different things. Recently, he has
tasked me with research on iron powder metals and
how we can make these powders porous at the nanoscale through a series of operations. I find this research
interesting because there is so much we can do with
resources that no one has thought of yet.
Who most influenced you on your journey to becoming
a professional engineer?
I have been blessed to have so many strong influences
along my journey to where I am now. My family has
always been there for me along with close friends,
coaches for high-school sports, and faculty in college.
I do not think I could possibly pin one person down
because I believe life is a culminating experience and
it is these experiences that pushed me to enter the
engineering field.
How did your involvement with SAE prepare you for the
workforce?
In college I was the President and Team Captain of
the Millersville Baja Team. I believe that gave me the
strong basis to try and be the best leader I can be. It is
my goal to be a leader in industry, whether that be a
plant manager or project manager, and Baja SAE gave
me the opportunity to learn how people work, what
motivates them. Something I say is, "People are the
most consistent inconsistency," and I like that because it
is a problem that I like to try and solve.

Why did you decide to transfer your SAE Student Membership to
Professional Membership after you graduated?
Being a part of a larger organization is something that I think students
overlook. As we mature into our fields, it is important to gather and
maintain professional contacts. SAE memberships allow us to do that.
What do you like to do for fun?
I am a bit of an adrenalin freak. I love to go fast on motorsports whether
it be jet skis, dirt bikes-really, anything with a motor I am interested in. I
love to hike, camp, and go out and explore the world. Rock climbing and
cliff jumping are awesome. I also really like to eat.
Any other thoughts?
Being a leader is a lot of work. Being a good leader is even more. But I
assure you, it is fun and it is worth it. You will never be a good leader all
the time. But a good leader knows that and is continually searching for
opportunities to fix and make better.
