car. Further, a lot of testing for a good setup on the car
helped, too. But we are also not only testing for a setup,
we also have to test the components. For example, the
engine test bench helps us to find a good and more fuelefficient engine map. The answer on the above question
is that it is the engineering solution of the whole car and
not a single system which makes the car so dominant."
For ETS team captain Alex Guerin, "I think that the
biggest engineering challenge was the integration of
the supercharger to our custom engine. The powertrain
department was very involved and worked very hard to

have the result that everybody saw in competition." In addition to third
place overall at FSAE Michigan and first place overall at Formula North,
the team finished first in the Skid Pad Event at both competitions and
first and second in the Design Events.
The most difficult tradeoff decision that the University of MichiganAnn Arbor team had to make was power vs fuel efficiency in the
Endurance Event, team captain Alex Marshalek told MOMENTUM:
"As much fun as it is to go fast, we must consider all aspects of the
competition to maximize our points earned. But the biggest impact on
our overall performance was the effective use of time on our testing
days. By setting goals and choosing what data we wanted to accomplish,
we ensured that every minute on track was a minute being used to
validate systems or tune the car to its maximum performance."
In addition to its top 5 finishes at each of the three Formula SAE IC
competitions, MRacing finished first in the Acceleration Event at all three
of them. It finished first in the Endurance Event at Lincoln and North.
Finishing first at FSAE Lincoln IC Class was Polytechnique Montreal.
"We spend so much time working on the car and thinking about
the project, it really meant the world to bring back a win from a
competition," team co-captain Renaud Pepin told MOMENTUM. "It is a
great acknowledgement for the sacrifices made throughout the year by
everyone. I am so grateful to have been able to work for such a great
team of people and that we managed to reach our goals."
Pepin noted that "This year was our first year running aerodynamics,
and the performance gap compared to last year was quite big. The
previous car was already a very well performing machine, and we made
sure everything was sorted and that we did not skip steps before adding
aero to it. We knew the potential that a good aero package had for our
car, and we really pushed all year long in order to make sure it would be
on the car."
Oregon State University rebounded from a less than stellar season
in 2018 to finish fifth overall at FSAE Michigan this year. Team captain
Sam Nicholson noted that Global Formula Racing is an international
collaboration between Oregon State University and Germany's Duale
