SUSPENSION SIMULATION

FOR ZUURA FORMULA RACING

Zuura Formula Racing's ZFR-06, its newest model, ranked seventh overall and
won the static and design events at FFS India 2018.

IF A TEAM IS GOING TO RANK HIGH In a Formula SAE (FSAE) race, then
it must optimize its car. The only way to do this in time for race day is to
iterate the design with the help of simulation. This is a valuable lesson
learned by Zuura Formula Racing (ZFR), the FSAE team from the Vellore
Institute of Technology (VIT) in Chennai, India.

A good suspension keeps the tire as perpendicular to
the ground as possible to achieve maximum traction.
The front geometry is designed to have negative
camber in jounce as it keeps the wheels perpendicular
to the ground and also resists body roll. For that we
first designed our suspension geometry in Solidworks
modeling software from Dassault Systèmes by keeping
in mind all the constraints of packaging. We then
modeled in Adams/car software from MSC Software
for further kinematic optimization to achieve our
design targets.
The main target before vehicle dynamics simulation
engineers at Zuura Formula Racing was to improve the
ride and handling, which means reducing yaw, pitch,
and roll rates. We used Adams/car to do the design
study and make changes to improve the handling
characteristics. We first modelled our suspension
geometry kinematic analysis for parameters like camber,
caster, and toe. To counter the large roll moment,
the team designed enough camber gain into the
suspension by iterating the geometry with the software
