SAE 101: EDGE RESEARCH REPORTS
EXPLORING EMERGING and unsettled
technologies related to the mobility
engineering industry, SAE EDGE
Research Reports are SAE's newest
information offering. They occupy a
space out at the "unsettled" end of
the content spectrum, explaining and
framing the challenges organizations
face with rapidly evolving technologies.
"EDGE Research Reports tackle
emerging problems and impactful
issues that also have large safety
concerns, such as in the automated
and connected vehicles space," said
Jill Leonard, SAE Product Manager for
EDGE Research Reports. "They are
geared towards engineers as well as
management and business strategists
to give them a framework for thinking
about and approaching these unsettled
areas. They both answer questions and
ask questions."
Typically, EDGE Research Reports
are 20 to 40 pages in length and are
available in both print and, via SAE
MOBILUS (saemobilus.sae.org/),
electronic format. They are available to
individuals at between $120 and $200
each (most about $150) and also are
available as a subscription offering to
organizations.
By comparison, SAE technical papers
sell for about $30 each. "EDGE Research
Reports really are a premium product,"
said Leonard.
And whereas people come forward
on their own to submit technical
papers, EDGE Research Reports are
commissioned publications designed to
present an unbiased state-of-the-state
view into a given unsettled technology.
"We have a sense of what the market is
seeking through direct feedback, and we
reach out to subject matter experts to find
the right people to draft the right reports
on the right technologies," she continued.
EDGE Research Reports grow out of
discussions among experts and represent
perspectives from industry, government,
and academia to provide well-rounded
insight into emerging and rapidly
evolving technologies.

sectors, such as connected/automated
vehicle technologies; electrification; and
advanced manufacturing. Other EDGE
Research Reports in development also
include aspects of augmented reality,
advanced materials, and unmanned
transportation.
Getting information out rapidly on a
topic is a key function of the reports, said
Leonard, who noted that it took only 12
weeks from conception to publication
for the first one, "Unsettled Topics
Concerning Sensors for Automated
Road Vehicles." In that case, she and
another SAE staffer organized a half-day
workshop in Silicon Valley with 20 subject
matter experts from all levels of various
relevant industries-"a pool of unbiased
and reputable individuals representing a
slice of the state of the industry in that
moment," said Leonard.
Moderated by the editor of the report,
Sven Beiker, Managing Director, Silicon
Valley Mobility, the workshop featured
a largely free-flowing discussion of
relevant matters. "Then we developed
a framework, or outline," Leonard
explained. "We said, 'okay, here are
the top three or four areas that we've

identified as being very unsettled.' We
had a professional technical writer in the
room with us, and over the next couple
weeks he developed the report based on
the discussions.
That report on sensors was unique and
paved the way for subsequent reports to
streamline discussion among the selected
experts via conference call. Each report
has its own set of experts.
Twelve reports will have been published
by year's end 2019, and plans are to at
least double that output in 2020.

Research Reports that Leonard identified,
in addition to the one noted above, are:
* "Unsettled Technology Areas in
Autonomous Vehicle Test and Validation"
* "Unsettled Technology Domains in
Industrial Metrology"
* "Unsettled Issues in Determining
Appropriate Modeling Fidelity for
Automated Driving Systems Simulation"
