EDITORIAL
TIME TO FRESHEN UP MOMENTUM
At the close of the magazine's 10th year of
publication, the team behind MOMENTUM
has decided it's time to do a comprehensive
analysis of the magazine's structure, with an eye
toward improving the reading experience for
2020 and beyond.
What we've got in mind is something
between a tweak and a makeover. Let's call it a
refresh.
But before we speed too far down Refresh
Road, we want to hear from you, SAE Student
Patrick Ponticel,
Members, as to what you like and dislike about
MOMENTUM Editor
MOMENTUM-not only in terms of content, but
also in terms of visual appeal. We are open to
constructive criticism about any aspect of the
magazine, actually. This is your chance to help shape the publication.
We think we've got a pretty good product in MOMENTUM, but
we can never be sure we're hitting the mark dead on unless we get
feedback. In our constant quest for perfection, we are always looking
for opinions from those who matter most to the magazine: you, SAE
Student Members.
We do have some ideas of our own. For one thing, the Membership
Team wants to keep you better informed of the many SAE products and
services that are available to students-many of them free or discounted.
There are probably more than you think there are. So you will see some
kind of change in that regard-certainly in regard to the amount of
information we provide, and perhaps also in regard to where and how
that information is presented in the magazine. Currently it's housed in a
Section we call SAE News, toward the back (pages 18-21 in this issue).
The magazine section that students seem to be most interested in-
for good reason-is called "Student Generation." That section (pages
4-15 in this issue) houses nearly all of the articles that students write. But
throughout MOMENTUM's 10-year run, we've published many articles
in that section that are not authored by students. So maybe "Student
Generation" isn't the best name for the section. What do you think?
Planned and established under different (and since departed)
leadership in a different department at SAE headquarters, MOMENTUM
has included a section called "Today's Engineering." Typically, it consists
of two articles borrowed from SAE's technical publications (Automotive
Engineering, Truck & Off-Highway Engineering, Autonomous Vehicle
Engineering, and Aerospace & Defense Technology). They are interesting
articles, but we're not so sure those pages couldn't be better used for
other purposes or topics. Do you have any ideas for a possible new
section? Or would you prefer we expand the Student Generation section
and eliminate Today's Engineering?
Please share your thoughts with us by emailing momentum@sae.org.

SAE International Sections

SAE International sections are local units comprised of 100 or more SAE International members
in a defined technical or geographic area. The purpose of local sections is to meet the technical,
developmental, and personal needs of the SAE members in a given area. For more information,
please visit sae.org/sections.

SAE International Collegiate Chapters

Collegiate Chapters are a way for SAE International student members to get together on their
campus and develop skills in a student-run and -elected environment. Student Members are vital
to the continued success and future of SAE. While your course work teaches you the engineering
knowledge you need, participation in your SAE collegiate chapter can develop or enhance other
important skills, including leadership, time management, project management, communications,
organization, planning, delegation, budgeting, and finance. For more information, or for how to
find your local chapter, please visit students.sae.org/chapters/collegiate/.
