aircraft and was expected to land in a target area. The glider also had to
be autonomous and weigh less than 9 ounces. We had never designed
something similar before, so we developed several prototypes and
analyzed the modifications that, in turn, would have to be introduced on
the main aircraft. As expected, three main issues haunted us throughout
the design phase: a) total aircraft weight, b) its drag, and c) the
autonomous control of the glider, which required its own handling.

Let us go over these issues separately.
Regarding weight, experience and innovation were the two great allies
to tackle this challenge. Due to the fact that we have been using vacuum
lamination for many years and have developed significant expertise
with excellent results, we dealt with fuselage and wing beams as simple
beams and laminated them using the vacuum lamination process.
Regarding the main landing gear, we concluded it would be more
interesting to place it on stringers below the wing to create a larger area
for drop-out loads. At the same time, these two considerations would
affect the selected geometry.
We needed to avoid weight redundancies while developing a light
structure that could also stand potential landing impacts. Thus, we

opted for a topological optimization. We referred
to aeronautical standards to estimate the loads that
the main landing gear was expected to bear. Then
we created a domain to determine the stresses and
boundary conditions of the selected main landing gear
and the docking system for the main landing gear on
the stringers. It was a strenuous process that involved
numerous simulations of different geometries. In the
end, we reached a weight reduction of almost 30%
when compared to previous similar geometries. The
