ANOTHER YEAR,
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL

CORNELL BAJA SAE TEAM

Cornell's M15 getting some air in the
Endurance Event at Baja SAE California 2019.
The team and its car finished first in the Event.

Cornell University was among
only five teams to finish in the
top 10 in each of 2019's three
Baja SAE competitions.

2 OUT OF 2700-THIS WAS THE FINAL RESULT
announced at Baja SAE Oregon 2018, the third and final
Baja SAE competition of the 2017-2018 season. Cornell,
with M14, was an unbelievably close 2 points behind RIT,
which had accumulated 2,721 points over the season to
win the Mike Schmidt Memorial Award sponsored by RIT.
We knew going into 2018-19 that the previous season
would be a hard one to follow, but we saw M15 as an
opportunity to improve upon M14 and keep learning,
testing, and developing to continue Cornell's history of
success in the Baja SAE competitions. As a team captain
during my fourth and final year on this team, I was
continuously inspired by the work of my teammates that

I am excited to share in this article, and I leave Cornell anticipating what
else this incredibly dedicated team will achieve in the future.

TESTING
Each year, our design cycle starts with targeted testing to better
understand major factors that would affect the design of the upcoming
season car.
We first started with suspension testing. M14 had 13.75" of
compression-droop travel-the highest in recent years after we had
strived to increase travel incrementally each season. Was it time to
break the 14" mark? Would we dare to strive for 15"? Thankfully, no. We
had experienced enough manufacturing complications and clearance
issues to question the desire to further increase travel. Instead, the
question became whether we had reached a point where we were not
fully utilizing the travel of the shocks, and further increasing travel would
result in diminishing gains.
We fitted linear potentiometers in line with the shocks and drove
on characteristic endurance and rock-crawl/suspension courses to
understand the range of travel used on a representative shock tune. The
results supported the hypothesis that we were not maxing out the shock
travel, and perhaps reducing the travel slightly would provide benefits
elsewhere. Another factor limiting travel was the CV joint angle, which
changes as the half-shafts articulate with the wheels. Research showed
an inverse relationship between torque transfer efficiency and joint
