SAE AND GM MAKE SMART CHOICE FOR
AUTODRIVE CHALLENGE YEAR 3 VENUE
A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART automated and connected
vehicle testing facility in Ohio will serve as the venue
for the third year of the four-year AutoDrive Challenge,
a university competition headline-sponsored by SAE
International and General Motors Co.
The new facility is called the SMARTCenter and is
part of the larger Transportation Research Center, Inc.
(TRC). TRC describes itself as "the largest independent
vehicle test facility and proving grounds in the U.S." The
SMARTCenter alone is 540 acres in area.
"The facility contains all the necessary infrastructure
for transportation innovators to test their technologies
in a safe, secure, and repeatable real-world environment,
all before these vehicles and components are deployed
on public roads and highways," a TRC spokesperson
told MOMENTUM. "This includes a variety of roadways,
intersections, traffic signals, signs, and smart
infrastructure to help develop and challenge advanced
vehicle systems. The facility is also located within the
existing TRC Proving Ground facility, which provides
unprecedented full vehicle test capabilities. We can
combine automated and connected vehicle testing with
durability, dynamics, and safety."
About the agreement to hold Year 3 of the
AutoDrive Challenge at TRC, Kevin Dietrich, General
Motors' AutoDrive Challenge Program Manager, said:
"Autonomous vehicles have the potential to greatly
improve the future through increasing safety and access
to transportation. We are pleased that the AutoDrive
Challenge teams will have a unique opportunity to
continue their hands-on work with this technology at a
facility such as the Transportation Research Center."
Said SAE's Allison Hostetler: "SAE International is
proud to host our Year 3 AutoDrive Challenge Event in
June of 2020 at the Transportation Research Center.
The newly built SMARTCenter will provide an excellent
canvas for our teams to validate their Year 3 designs, test
integrated mapping, and demonstrate their objectives of
autonomous driving."
TRC Inc. has a rich history in automated and connected
vehicle testing, dating back to the early 1970s, which
utilized various facilities at TRC. With the rapid expansion
of automated vehicle and connected vehicle technology,
TRC recognized that it needed a dedicated AV/CV
facility to complement its existing test features. The
SMARTCenter (Smart Mobility Advanced Research and
Test Center) is part of the larger complete service offering
that TRC Inc. provides to the global mobility industry. The
larger TRC complex is 4,500 acres in area.
The $45 million SMARTCenter was funded by the
State of Ohio, JobsOhio, and The Ohio State University.

"We are pleased that the AutoDrive Challenge teams will have a unique opportunity
to continue their hands-on work with this technology at a facility such as the
Transportation Research Center," said Kevin Dietrich, General Motors AutoDrive
Challenge Program Manager.
It was approximately five years from the first facility concept to shovel
in the ground.
Although TRC led the design of the SMARTCenter, a number of key
stakeholders, including Ohio State, were consulted in the planning of
the facility.
TRC has been involved with SAE International since the group's
inception in the 1970s. TRC representatives regularly attend SAE
events such as WCX and COMVEC. TRC has also hosted and sponsored
numerous student events including Baja SAE and Formula SAE. The
majority of its engineers are also SAE International members, many of
whom participate in SAE working groups.
Of the agreement between TRC and SAE for the AutoDrive Challenge,
a TRC spokesperson said: "We are greatly looking forward to hosting
year three of the AutoDrive Challenge. We look forward to seeing these
students put their skills to the test at our facility. We are humbled to be
part of an event that help shape the future generation of engineers."
