Nicknamed "Our Hopes and Dreams," this was the earliest in the season a flight-worthy prototype had ever been constructed.
store-bought wing and the biggest motor we could find,
and brought it to the field for an almost vertical takeoff
and landing. This gave our young team an unintentional
confidence boost-we had successfully made something
fly! As well, we learned to increase the tail size even
further to fix the tail-heaviness in flight.

"...we took what we did know and
forged our own path."
We flew the full-scale prototype eight times in
January 2019, in the midst of a college-wide science
and technology exposition. This was to the exhibition
coordinator's dismay, as every time we flew it, our
display lost its main show piece. Luckily, it was always
returned mostly intact. From the experience gained
from these flights, we decided to switch to rollerblade
wheels instead of foam wheels to reduce rolling
resistance and to use aluminum duct tape as our
preferred passenger retention strategy when it became
cold enough for the glue to detach from the Velcro
passenger bay hatch. We successfully flew up to 75%
of our maximum capacity, and used the flights as data
points to validate our payload prediction spreadsheet.
They agreed within 10%.

COMPETITION PLANE TESTING
Two days before we were due to send the competition
plane, named the Sundog, to Texas for the 2019 SAE Aero
Design competition, the poor weather abated enough
for a single, disastrous test flight-failed glue joints in
the nose truss caused the motor to detach, with the rest
of the plane following in a spectacular nosedive before

somehow crashing upside down, crushing stabilizers and wings alike.
We were left with a spread of payload plates amongst the wreckage
(the idea of plastic retaining bolts to save weight was immediately
discarded), and it took the entire team working around the clock to fix it
in the 36 hours before the trailer left. While the timing was unfortunate,
it was preferred to fix these problems before competition.

"We were left with a young, inexperienced
set of juniors to lead the team, with a lot of
passion but somewhat bereft of knowledge."
It was a contentious decision to fly before the flight rounds started.
We passed technical inspection and took her to the field, wanting to
test at the different atmospheric conditions and see if our previous
repairs had held up. Some team members suggested that it would be
better to fail at the starting line, rather than fail before reaching it. It
